the pokemon that couldn’t evolve or trade back in 2010, when heartgold and soulsilver launched, gamestop gave out a special shiny pikachu-colored pichu as a limited event. most trainers just boxed it as a rare trophy. but this pichu was the secret key to a special event. if you placed that exact event pichu at the front of your party and visited the ilex forest shrine, a hidden cutscene played. a unique spiky-eared pichu would jump out from the bushes and join your team for free. but there was the twist. no matter how much this pichu leveled, it refused to evolve. professor elm in new bark town explained that it had time-traveled so much with celebi that its body was permanently frozen in this form. this little pichu had its own special overworld and battle sprites, different pokeathlon stats, and could even force transform to copy its spiky ear. shiny versions exist in the code, but the fixed personality value tied to players trainer id made them impossible to obtain. because this form never existed in later generations, the transfer system completely locked it out. spiky-eared pichu cannot be moved to black and white or any future game. every single one is trapped forever on its original heartgold or soulsilver cartridge.
