This is a lie. When I moved to Shanghai from Korea I had a weird bank issue and had no money. I had like 20k rmb for 3 months and lived FINE. I didnt pay rent, but I asked how much the rent was where I was staying (my job was paying it). I was in an ugly neighborhood. it was like 2k. So I could have paid and still been fine. I would have had to cook at home and not buy anything, but I would have lived off 14k for three months EASILY. Even in Shanghai.

A lot of Americans go to China and say shit like- “Look how amazing it is! Look how cheap it is!” But it’s because you are the 1% there. There is 500 square miles in China that is more advanced, more cutting edge than anywhere on earth. Living there costs more than manhattan. Then there’s 5000 square miles that are as good as anywhere in the USA. All tier 1 cities. Living there costs more than living in Los Angeles in REAL TERMS. Apartments are a million usd. Then there’s the rest of the country. It’s still poor. Work is hard. And that’s 90% of the country.

@Sublimenightss @floral_femme Do you mean because these people are holding up the line, or because dispatchers assume every call is like this?

@SkinnyTuna I’ve noticed specifically Chinese speakers using “dear” a lot? like opening professional business emails with “hi dear~” a friend said something abt it not sounding nearly as intimate in Chinese but it still blindsides me every time

is there any explanation for why ESL speakers use the word "kindly" 40000x more than native english speakers? is it particularly prominent in some decades-old british ESL curricula?

@CaliYugaBoomer @uncle_deluge Nah. Difference sentence structure with mandarin. Hokkien - > Malay -> English. Early generation Chinese imigrants is hokkien and hakka people, not Han. They learn Malay first then British.

I would like to adapt Singapore's "Speak Good English" campaign to other cities with incomprehensible vernacular dialects, Toronto for example

@bubbleboi When people say stuff like this I always wonder what they are referring to. Is it the new buildings with the LEDs on them? Is it new rail lines? ~30% of china lives on less than $700 a year. Their median income is ~$4k. Is the success the infra in cities?

I feel like a lot of China’s success largely comes from the fact that they have had engineers in charge who were forced to read graduate level sociology & philosophy from Hegel, Marx, & Roseau at an early age. While all of our engineering talent mostly comes across philosophy after graduating and falls into the trap of brain rot Peter Singer utilitarianism, typically popular with high achieving rich kids who need a narrative to justify their wealth and guilt over it or far autistic right wing eugenics neo economic caste systems influenced by Ayn Rand as the only way to explain the gap between income intelligence and getting no huzz. Result being that any of the system thinkers and shape rotators having absolutely zero influence over the government or economic policy and we are ruled over by word cell lawyers & venture capitalists who typically see things primarily through the lens of winning a case/deal and moving onto the next battle with no long term plan for anything other than job hopping whenever a better offer comes along.
