British speech regulator Ofcom just fined an American website for American speech on American servers. The site already blocked UK visitors. Ofcom ultimately got around the block with a VPN and said the site was still accessible. That's like saying a locked door is open because someone could pick the lock. The UK's Internet censor, Ofcom, is apparently harassing random hobby website operators in Kentucky, who have already geoblocked the UK, to get them to comply with the Online Safety Act.

This is untrue. If anyone in the UK wants to see how untrue it is, feel free to navigate to sanctioned dash su*c*de dot net yourself and see if you can access the site. Ofcom couldn't get through it either, which is why their decision relied on evidence gathered by VPN.

I consulted the UK government on matters related to online child safety and I can say with a great deal of confidence, they planned to introduce scope creep from day 1. This is about forcing everyone to have their identity captured so it can be used to monitor and control access

1. You don’t need digital ID for this policy 2. Your personal attacks on people are really grim 3. Lord Nash is an incredible public servant, not content with setting up brilliant schools he is now fighting to keep children safe outside of them. If you don’t want people like this in your party more fool you 4. Good to know that you are against a social media ban for children, this isn’t what others in Reform have said, but at least parents know not to vote for Reform now

.@vonderleyen "The European #AgeVerification app is technically ready. It respects the highest privacy standards in the world. It's open-source, so anyone can check the code..." I did. It didn't take long to find what looks like a serious #privacy issue. The app goes to great lengths to protect the AV data AFTER collection (is_over_18: true is AES-GCM'd); it does so pretty well. But, the source image used to collect that data is written to disk without encryption and not deleted correctly. For NFC biometric data: It pulls DG2 and writes a lossless PNG to the filesystem. It's only deleted on success. If it fails for any reason (user clicks back, scan fails & retries, app crashes etc), the full biometric image remains on the device in cache. This is protected with CE keys at the Android level, but the app makes no attempt to encrypt/protect them. For selfie pictures: Different scenario. These images are written to external storage in lossless PNG format, but they're never deleted. Not a cache... long-term storage. These are protected with DE keys at the Android level, but again, the app makes no attempt to encrypt/protect them. This is akin to taking a picture of your passport/government ID using the camera app and keeping it just in case. You can encrypt data taken from it until you're blue in the face... leaving the original image on disk is crazy & unnecessary. From a #GDPR standpoint: Biometric data collected is special category data. If there's no lawful basis to retain it after processing, that's potentially a material breach. youtube.com/watch?v=4VRRri…

The EFF provided additional clarification on why they left X but are remaining on places like Facebook and TikTok. If I'm being completely honest, I still don't understand their reasoning. They wrote that they're staying on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok because "people there deserve access to information too" ... so ... are they implying people on X do not deserve access to this information? I don't understand. I'm not trying to be antagonistic or sarcastic either, I wholeheartedly do not understand what they're saying. Does anyone understand?
