10/ If we are serious about tackling hatred in all its forms, responses must be consistent, principled and equal. Taking Islamophobia seriously through equal recognition, urgency and action is essential to building trust, protecting communities and upholding justice for all.

9/ When acts of violence or hate fail to prompt equivalent attention and action, it risks creating the perception of a hierarchy of victimhood, whether intended or not. Unequal responses can deepen mistrust in institutions, reinforce feelings of marginalisation and harden social divisions at a time when cohesion is essential.

🧵1/ There must be no hierarchy when it comes to hate. Violence against any community is abhorrent and must be treated with equal seriousness, urgency and condemned without hesitation. However, too often that standard is not applied equally.

ReformUK Scotland Conference Opens with Islamophobia and Laughter Reform MP, Sarah Pochin, proudly boasted 'I really wanted to come on in a Reform tartan burka, but apparently I wasn't allowed' , to which she received applause and laughter from the crowd. Pochin is no stranger when it comes to controversy and racism, famously complaining about seeing racial diversity on TV, "It drives me mad when I see adverts full of black people, full of Asian people".

On this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, let us make a serious commitment to eradicate it in the UK Islamophobia is rising in the UK and around the world, threatening the safety, dignity and lives of Muslim communities. The International Day to Combat Islamophobia was established in the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque attacks, in which 51 Muslims were murdered while attending Friday prayers. Seven years on, these horrendous attacks remain a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of Islamophobia and the urgent need to combat it. Read Full Statement: mend.org.uk/international-…

CfMM State of British Media 2025 report The Centre for Media Monitoring’s new report reveals a worrying picture of media coverage on Muslims and Islam in the UK. Nearly half of all articles about Muslims or Islam contains measurable bias. At a time when anti-Muslim hate crimes are at record levels and Islamophobia is rising, these reporting patterns are particularly alarming.

New Charity Commission Powers Must Not be Used to Police Political Dissent MEND is deeply concerned by proposals contained within the Government’s new “Protecting What Matters” social cohesion strategy which seek to expand the powers of the Charity Commission to suspend trustees and ultimately shut down charities on the basis of alleged “extremist abuse.” The long-term health of British civil society depends on protecting freedom of association and lawful dissent, not weakening it. The Charity Commission needs to remain politically neutral and undertake its regulatory function based on evidence of criminal wrongdoing not subjective assessments of ‘extremism.’ Read Full Statement mend.org.uk/new-charity-co…

The government’s new definition of Islamophobia is watered-down and omits the term “Islamophobia”, using “anti-Muslim hostility” instead. This risks narrowing the focus to individual acts of prejudice, rather than recognising discrimination as a structural phenomenon across public life. British Muslims are not seeking privilege, they are asking for equality and protection.

MEND Statement: Government’s Anti-Muslim Hostility Definition Must Lead to Real Change The government has unveiled its definition of “anti-Muslim hostility” aimed at addressing discrimination against Muslims. However, this represents a watered-down definition that falls short of what many Muslim organisations and experts have consistently called for in recognising and addressing Islamophobia. Muslim civil society organisations must be meaningfully involved in the process. They can no longer be sidelined and should be included in shaping guidance and training public sector bodies to recognise and respond to Islamophobia. The government must now show, through transparent engagement and action, that this definition will genuinely protect Muslim communities. Read Full Statement Below: mend.org.uk/anti-muslim-ho…
