In the year 2000, Windows OS had >90% market share. Over the next few years, phones went smart, and they needed an OS. Microsoft tried to copy-paste Windows onto phones. It was a train wreck. But Android showed up and considered the new challenges of power usage, touch screen UI, and mobility, and they designed for these from the start. That led to a better solution that now has the vast majority of smart phone market share. It’s now 2026, and glasses are going smart. Incumbents think they will copy-paste their existing phone OS onto the glasses. But they’re not considering the new challenges of power usage, glasses UI, and proactive/contextual interaction. That’s why we’re building MentraOS. We believe smart glasses need to be great eyewear first, or they’ll never get adopted. This introduces massive challenges around lightweight (<40 grams with Rx lenses), all-day battery, and the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously that are listening and can activate at any moment. We don’t believe the previous generation of operating systems will enable that to happen. MentraOS treats the glasses as lightweight, simple input/output devices and offloads all the heavy processing to the phone. That enables sleek, light glasses that run all day. MentraOS has an app runtime and orchestration layer on the phone that assumes multiple apps are running and listening at the same time. This enables proactive AI that helps you the moment you need it. Just as important, MentraOS is 100% open source. OEMs building glasses need access to the source code to move fast, make modifications, and ensure they continue to own the stack. What’s this mean for you? As a user, it means that you get the best glasses experience, where your daily prescription glasses go smart and offer you new value in daily life. As a dev, it means you can write 1 app that runs on any pair of smart glasses. I don't care about 99% of these smart glasses launches. They all have the same problem. They try to wrap a phone around your head instead of building great eyewear. Big tech and startups keep launching heavy/uncomfortable glasses. Users try them, they're fun for a while, then they end up in the drawer because they're not realistic to wear everyday. How many smart glasses founders actually wear their glasses everyday? Of course it's not just weight - balance, material, fit, visual comfort, 2-eye display are all critical to comfort. We designed MentraOS from the ground up to be an OS for eyewear. MentraOS is the only way to enable eyewear that is both truly smart and truly eyewear. We let the phone and cloud handle the computing and apps, and keep the glasses lightweight and focused only on I/O. If you're a dev, you build smart glasses apps on MentraOS. If you're a smart glasses OEM, you embed MentraOS into your glasses and app. If you're a user, MentraOS disappears in the background so you can focus on augmenting your intelligence and communication. I just called my Mom from my smart glasses. Introducing video calls on Mentra Live smart glasses. Join Google Meet, Teams, or Zoom call directly from your glasses. Imagine field workers like HVAC techs, electricians, or mechanics calling into an expert remotely. The expert can see what they see and have a live voice call with them, getting help exactly when they need it. You might have seen a demo like this before... so what's different here? It's all about wearability. Classical enterprise smart glasses are heavy, uncomfortable, and never make it past pilot pergatory. Mentra Live are super lightweight and shaped like regular glasses. Workers can wear them all day, and the battery lasts for a full shift. Also, since MentraOS is open-source, you can build your own apps, deploy on-prem, and stay fully compliant. Video calling is rolling out in general availability to Mentra Live users later this month.

We built and shipped smart glasses from scratch in 12 months. The hardware wasn't the hardest part. A year ago we launched MentraOS 1.0, the first open operating system for smart glasses. Early adopters could install apps and get new experiences on their glasses. Builders finally had a real dev platform. But it only supported glasses with displays. We quickly grew to thousands of users, and hundreds of them asked for the same thing: camera glasses they could actually build on. Glasses that were unlocked, that didn't stream your view straight to Meta. Glasses that put you in control. Notes, AI, live streaming, recording, take calls, talk to AI. So we built them. In February we shipped the first 1,000 Mentra Live smart glasses. This week we ship batch 2. But here's what's interesting. We shipped with a broad feature set, and the user signal was immediate: AI notes. Not streaming. Not general-purpose AI. Notes. Users love it, they're filing bugs on it, they're telling us exactly how to make it better. That's the signal we wanted. So we've gone all in. Notes is one of the first times I've genuinely gotten sustained value from smart glasses (alongside translation in China!). Expanding your memory while staying present in the moment, capturing what what matters from what you hear and what you see. Less gimmick, more augmentation. In a world where everyone is racing to build the everything device, focus wins.
