@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart i’m not going to continue arguing this point, and i am now going to stop replying to you. it’s not because i couldn’t defend it until i die, but it’s because i think that’s what it would take and you still wouldn’t change your mind and we both have lives to live. all the best

kb@ojvhteuhyhes

“what about the indigenous people!” the island was uninhabited “britain shouldn’t control territory hundreds of miles away!” they are self-governed “the people should decide!” they did, 99.8% chose to remain british. just sounds made up lol

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart i don’t think you’re really understanding the hypocrisy here. you can’t dismiss another population’s self determination because you’ve decided that they don’t count

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart argentina is allowed to invade and forcibly take the territory they never actually established themselves on from 3,000 people, but it wasn’t ok for britain to re-establish themselves again 120 people?

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart but i get it now! so you’re allowed to invade territory & keep it because you’ve “incorporated them into the national identity” but if anyone else does it then it’s all a big sham and they’re an “implanted population” with no right to self determination. am i getting this right?

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart they’ve been there since the 1800s, they weren’t just parachuted in. the whole of argentina is an implanted population by that metric

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart oh well colonialism is fine then if incorporated into the national identity! so i guess the falklands are british since they have been incorporated into our national identity and they overwhelming want to be british. i am glad we agree

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart why are you waiting for them to claim it? give it back now. and for the last time, i have never sought to deny anything british rule has done, but you’re coming off pretty petulant demanding territory that was never yours but being happy to hold onto other people’s land

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart argentina didn’t take the land, they had a very small settlement for less than 10 years. i don’t know what protocols and symbols you’re referring to, there was no effective administration established by argentina

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart again, this isn’t true. the british and the french arrived almost simultaneously and the british didn’t know the french were there for a while. they didn’t have iphones or twitter… once britain, spain and france did dispute the land they came to a diplomatic agreement

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart it’s also really hypocritical to demand your “territory” back as a country built by colonialists, with a history of exterminating/displacing the indigenous people and expanding through patagonia. that was someone else’s territory, that i dont expect you’ll be giving back, right?

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart this is genuinely just how it worked back then, and in this case there was no native population to displace so the land really was just up for grabs for anyone who could hold onto it, which argentina couldn’t.

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart when britain withdrew from the falklands in 1774, they left a plaque to claim continued sovereignty. when spain withdrew in 1810, they did the same. you can’t say that spain can then leave the whole of the falklands to argentina, but britain doesn’t retain a claim on them

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart show me where spain said “here you go these are for you” when they’d literally withdrew from them 5 years before granting argentine independence

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart for seven years there was a tiny argentine settlement. that is it. do you genuinely not understand how land changed hands back then? you had no automatic right to the land and you failed to establish a settlement, i’m not really sure how much clearer it can be

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart 1) it doesnt matter, they abandoned them 2) it doesnt matter, the point is the land cant have been given to argentina. you then tried to stake a claim, you couldn’t defend it. the point is you didn’t have any entitlement to anything

@meritrescoma14 @laidlaw_stuart the point is you saying that you want “your territory” back as if that isn’t entirely hypocritical. even if the falklands did ever belong to you (which they didn’t), you lost them. otherwise, give back the territory you took from others while expanding argentina.
