@ZoltnGborSzcs1 ...(b) for the second time in 40 years a party ends up in power from literally nowhere in two years. In that case, you end up working with people you know and trust, so close friends and even family members. And I can joke about Antall but SZDSZ had both dynamics.

@ZoltnGborSzcs1 Family member or loyal party cadre nepotism? I think in the Hungarian case is special because (a) if you start a party with your university friends you end up with your university friends being the other leading politicians in your party and...

He is also a member of the new Parliament and the legal director of the party. Imho, it is at least as interesting that this important cabinet position goes to a loyal party cadre instead of a well-respected expert-figure (like Kapitány) as is his family connections to Magyar.

Hungary’s future PM, Peter Magyar, faces his first major criticism after appointing his brother-in-law, Márton Melléthei-Barna, as justice minister (R). Melléthei has been a close friend since uni and married Magyar’s sister, a judge in 2025. She suspended her judicial duties.

@h_david_baer Magyar follows the old tradition of referring to clearly contradictory Hungarian historical figures (Kossuth vs. Wekerle) as precedents. It is like SZDSZ claiming the heritage of Eötvös and Kéthly. And the common thread here is conservative liberalism and/or populist third-way.

Magyar ran on the spirit of 1848. Constantly quoted Petőfi, Kossuth and appealed to Hungary’s liberal traditions. Anyone who doesn’t see this is either on Orban’s payroll or doesn’t know Hungarian or both.
Rod Dreher@roddreher

Yeah, if you say so. Magyar is a right-winger ran on Orban's policies on Ukraine and migration (but was more to the right than Orban!), the two biggest bones in Brussels's throat. He beat Orban fair and square. Ppl who see this as a victory for EU neoliberalism are bonkers.

@glegry Yeah I think if there is an encapsulation of why Fidesz failed, it is that during a cost of living crisis they spent billions on third-rate US postliberals to tweet on them.

The funniest aspect of how intensely and emotionally the fate of the Budapest-based post-liberals is debated here is how invisible these guys were in the broader Hungarian landscape. Only this post-mortem discussion makes clear how significant they thought to be.

@istvan_szilard @BungaCast Didn’t realise you went on Bungacast but time to give it a listen. And yes, Americanisation of Fidesz was a major issue, especially as Orbán is not a Trump-like character.

We've seen a path to victory throughout the campaign - says the Fidesz campaign chief. Irrespective of its content: no Hungarian talks like this, this "path" thing is US election lingo. As I pointed out in @BungaCast USmania just devoured the minds of many in Fidesz

@DanoGB77 @viktoriaserdult Nem. Mind az új körzetekben érintett helyeken (Fehérvár környéke, Budapest, Pest, Csongrád), mint az aránytalanul sok körzeted megyékben (Somogy, Tolna) tarol a Tisza.

To undestand the scope of what happened in Hungary last Sunday, let me show you the same map from the 2022 elections, at a time when Tisza did not even exist. (Electoral disctricts have since been redrawn.)

@ZoltnGborSzcs1 I think Starmer is a really bad political leader but the comparison is silly. But he might have learned from Biden’s mistakes.
