🍃The Strong Wind Watch for coastal Otago and Southland expires soon, as winds ease over the next few hours.

⛈️ Its been a wet and wild night in the west and south of the South Island, with 756 lightning strikes over the last 12 hours and wind gusts of 100 km/h recorded in Invercargill recently. Things will ease as we head through the afternoon.
Severe Weather Update🚨
🟠🚧🌨Road Snowfall Warnings have been issued for the lower South Island from Wednesday evening for:
- Milford Road (SH94)
- Crown Range Road
🟡💨Strong Wind Watches have been issued for coastal lower South Island for Thursday.
West to southwest winds may approach gale in exposed places, with gust speeds of about 100 km/h.
Affected areas include:
- Coastal Southland
- Stewart Island
- Coastal Otago south of Oamaru

The centre of Cyclone Vaianu has made landfall near the Maketu Peninsula. It will now cross the North Island before exiting this evening in Hawkes Bay.
11:30am update on Cyclone Vaianu. The centre is east of the Coromandel Peninsula now and moving steadily towards the Bay of Plenty coast. Below are some stats from the event so far.
The latest Cyclone Vaianu Severe Weather Watches and Warnings have been issued.
Widespread watches and warnings are still in force across the North Island and upper South Island, including Red Wind Warnings.
Cyclone Vaianu 9:30am Update:
The Rain Radar shows the centre of Cyclone Vaianu spinning to the east of the country as it continues to sink southwards. It now lies about 100km east of Great Barrier Island.
Cyclone Vaianu 8:20am Update:
This is what the satellite imagery from 7:30am shows, with the centre of Cyclone Vaianu (marked with a white x) visible to the northeast of the country and moving quickly south towards the Bay of Plenty.
