We had the honor of meeting Prof. Paola Rizzoli, emeritus professor at @MIT, USA, and a pioneering physical oceanographer who helped establish the METU-IMS oceanography tradition in the 1980s and 1990s. While celebrating the 50 years of excellence in marine sciences of #METUIMS, her insights and experience continue to inspire us today.

🌊@METU_ODTU is the only university from Türkiye invited to the Transformative Ocean Science - International Symposium in Venice! 💬 “Marine science is becoming the infrastructure through which we govern the ocean.” At this high-level event, #METUIMS Director @SalihogluBaris, as a member of the Symposium's Scientific Committee, emphasized the transformation of marine sciences toward a decision-making engine. Enstitümüzün 1976 girişli ilk lisansüstü öğrencilerinden ve ilk araştırma görevlilerinden olan, uzun yıllar boyunca ODTÜ Çevre Mühendisliği Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi ve yönetici olarak hizmet veren değerli mezunumuz Prof. Dr. Gürdal Tuncel’i kaybetmenin derin üzüntüsünü yaşıyoruz. Prof. Dr. Turgut Balkaş Hocamızın danışmanlığında tamamladığı yüksek lisans tezi, deniz kimyası alanında Türkiye’de gerçekleştirilen ilk çalışmalardan biri olup; deniz suyu ve sedimanlarda civa ölçümü ve biyojeokimyası gibi günümüzde dahi çalışılması son derece güç bir konuyu ele almıştır. Kendisine Allah’tan rahmet; ailesine, yakınlarına, meslektaşlarına ve öğrencilerine sabır ve başsağlığı diliyoruz.

🌊@METU_ODTU, #COP31Türkiye İstişare Toplantısı’nda denizler odağında küresel ve ulusal önceliklerin belirlenmesine katkı sundu! #ODTÜDBE Müdürümüz Prof. Dr. @SalihogluBaris, @csbgovtr ev sahipliğinde; Bakan Sayın @murat_kurum ve @TC_iklim Başkanı Prof. Dr. Halil Hasar’ın öncülüğünde gerçekleştirilen toplantıda “Denizler ve Okyanuslar” oturumunu yönetti. Oturumda; 🌍 Küresel öncelikler; uygulama–finansman–bilim bütünlüğünde ele alınarak dijital ikiz teknolojileri, mavi karbon, biyoçeşitlilik, kıyı direnci ve kamu–akademi–özel sektör iş birliği başlıklarında şekillendi. 🇹🇷 Ulusal öncelikler; Türkiye’nin küresel rolünü güçlendirme hedefi doğrultusunda bilim ve teknoloji kapasitesinin artırılması, bölgesel çözüm merkezi olma potansiyeli, mavi ekonomi dayanıklılığı ve iklim risk yönetimi ekseninde yoğunlaştı. #ODTÜDBE 50 yıllık bilimsel mirasıyla; denizlerimiz için yenilikçi araştırma, etkili politika ve ortak dönüşüm için çalışmaya devam edecek!

METU-IMS students conduct cutting-edge research across diverse aspects of #MarineSciences! 🌊 MSc student İrem Bekdemir successfully defended her thesis titled "Investigation of Didemnid Species Along the Turkish Coastlines Using Genetic, Environmental, and Morphological Data" supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Karahan. Her research provides a comprehensive and integrative assessment of Didemnidae along the Turkish coastline by combining: 🔹Environmental parameters 🔹Molecular analyses based on the COI gene 🔹Detailed morphological examinations By comparing newly generated data with previously published records, her study delivers an updated and systematic evaluation of Didemnid diversity in Turkish marine waters. METU-IMS students continue to enrich the marine sciences literature with their impactful research! Dr. Begüm Ece Tohumcu successfully defended her PhD thesis, "Diversity, Population Structure, and Holobiont Organization of Botryllid Ascidians with a Focus on 𝘉𝘰𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪 in Relation to Environmental Parameters along Turkish Coasts" supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Karahan. Her research; 🌊 Identified diversity patterns of botryllid ascidians along the Turkish coasts, clarifying structure within the 𝘉𝘰𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪 complex. 🧬 Uncovered population structure and gene flow using mitochondrial COI and microsatellite markers, revealing connectivity across environmental gradients. 🔬 Linked host-associated microbiomes to physicochemical conditions, defining the holobiont organization of 𝘉. 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪. 📊 Integrated diversity, genetics, and symbiont data to explain eco-evolutionary responses to environmental variation along the Turkish coastline. METU-IMS students are at the forefront of #MarineScience, conducting research that enhances our understanding of marine environments! Dr. Cem Serimözü, supervised by Prof. Dr. @SalihogluBaris and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nüvit Berkay Başdurak, successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Hydrodynamic Processes and Multi-Site Formation of Levantine Intermediate Water in a High-Resolution Model of the Levantine Sea.” His research: 🔹Developed a 2.2 km, 71-level high-resolution NEMO configuration (1992–2022) for the Levantine Sea, resolving intermediate water formation and circulation. 🔹Demonstrated multi-site formation of Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW). 🔹Identified thermodynamically driven formation mechanisms, modulated by wind forcing. 🔹Assessed long-term climate change impacts on surface and intermediate waters.
