I had a call with the Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas @araghchi . We discussed the situation in Iran and the spiralling escalation in the Middle East. Diplomatic solutions and de-escalation are urgently needed. I emphasized the need to end the strikes on neighbouring countries and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait Hormuz especially regarding the humanitarian aspect of global food security with a focus on fertilizers and other essential goods. Regarding the Iranian nuclear program Austria supports any diplomatic way forward that leads to a new agreement and full cooperation with the @iaeaorg . In times like this it is important to maintain dialogue.

The world calls for Easter peace. Ukraine proposes a weekend ceasefire — yet Russia responds with unprecedented attacks on cities, causing civilian casualties. This war must stop. We urge Russia to engage in meaningful talks and agree to a full, unconditional ceasefire.

Die Todesstrafe ist unmenschlich und mit dem Recht auf Leben und der Menschenwürde nicht vereinbar. Österreich setzt sich seit Jahren für die weltweite Abschaffung der Todesstrafe ein. Wir sprechen uns ausnahmslos und unter allen Umständen dagegen aus. On the anniversary of the Bucha massacre, we honour the victims as RU’s attacks on UA continue unabated. Even as war rages in the Middle East, RU’s aggression remains the greatest threat to our security. We will ensure full accountability. This war must end with a lasting peace.

Wichtiger Austausch mit UNO-Generalsekretär @antonioguterres zu den globalen Folgen der Eskalation im Nahen Osten speziell auch zur Blockade der Straße von Hormus, der Lage im Libanon und der Sicherheit der (auch österreichischen) Soldaten bei @UNIFIL_ . Die iranische Blockade der Meerenge treibt nicht nur die Preise für Energie in die Höhe, sondern auch die Kosten von Düngemittel. Bei unseren Bemühungen um Frieden und Stabilität geht es auch um die Ernährungssicherheit von Millionen von Menschen. Sicherheit, Energie und Ernährung hängen eng zusammen. Unser gemeinsamer Auftrag: Deeskalation vorantreiben, Diplomatie ermöglichen.
