For the 22nd time during the military conflict, the Zaporizhzhya NPP briefly lost all off-site power today, after the disconnection of its sole remaining power line, the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1. Although the disconnection was reportedly caused by thunderstorms, it once again highlights the fragility of the electrical grid and the need to strengthen the off-site power situation at the plant, DG @rafaelmgrossi says.

Nuclear techniques for better crops The IAEA and @FAO launched a new coordinated research project to help address one of agriculture's biggest challenges - producing more nutritious crops while adapting to climate change. This project uses nuclear and isotopic techniques to better understand how crops absorb and use nutrients. An IAEA team of experts has concluded a twelve-day International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) follow-up mission in the People’s Republic of China.  Building on an initial IPPAS mission conducted in 2017, it was the first ever IPPAS mission to include the review of the physical protection of a small modular reactor (SMR). The IAEA is leading a group of international experts this week in Japan to independently sample the 21st batch of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). IAEA teams based at nuclear power plants in Ukraine have heard sounds of military activity several times in recent days, including drones and gunfire, Director General @rafaelmgrossi said today. The reports highlight the persistent risks to nuclear safety and security during the ongoing conflict, underlining the challenging conditions facing these sites and the importance of continuing efforts by the IAEA to help prevent an accident. The IAEA has confirmed that the tritium concentration in the 21st batch of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS)-treated water, which Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) commenced discharging today from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), is far below Japan’s operational limit and consistent with international safety standards. The IAEA has been informed that the Zaporizhzhya NPP today lost off-site power for the 21st time during the military conflict when it lost its connection to the 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 line. At the same time, the IAEA team on-site was informed of and could hear military activity that caused the actuation of electrical protections of lines connecting the ZNPP to the Ferosplavna-1 line - including one that was recently repaired during June’s ceasefire. The site’s emergency diesel generators started operating to provide power for reactor cooling and other essential nuclear safety functions and power has been recovered - however, one line connecting the site to the power line remains unavailable. The latest loss of off-site power again highlights the extreme fragility of nuclear safety at the plant and the need for maximum military restraint to help prevent a nuclear accident, DG @rafaelmgrossi says.
