IAEA has been informed by the ZNPP that a drone targeted its External Radiation Control Laboratory (ECRL) today. There were no reported injuries and it is not yet known if the strike damaged the lab, which is located outside the ZNPP perimeter. IAEA team at the site has requested access to the lab, Director General @rafaelmgrossi says, reiterating that any attacks near nuclear sites can pose nuclear safety risks.

Today, IAEA Director General @rafaelmgrossi welcomed @FAODG Qu Dongyu and the Permanent Representatives of @FAO Member Countries at the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria. “Your presence today shows that Member States recognize the rising role of science, technology and innovation, including nuclear techniques, in shaping the future of global food security. These challenges require solutions that are science-driven, field-ready and scalable,” DG Grossi said. The FAO/IAEA Laboratories help member states harness nuclear technologies to tackle pressing challenges, from increasing crop yields and protecting livestock to controlling pests, advancing soil and water management and safeguarding food safety and authenticity.

Important to address the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in New York today. The #NPT has stood for more than five decades and commands the widest adherence of any treaty in this domain. Its 191 Parties bring together countries with and without nuclear weapons, united by a shared responsibility. This is a very particular moment. The risk of nuclear disaster has risen to levels not seen since the height of the Cold War. War has returned to Europe and the Middle East, and the multilateral frameworks underpinning peace and security are under immense strain. In today’s nuclear domain, we face a precarious standoff, with more actors, more risks, and less clarity. Preventing nuclear proliferation is in our common interest, and the NPT is our most powerful multilateral instrument. At the heart of this effort is the @IAEAorg’s safeguards regime, ensuring that nuclear material is not diverted from peaceful to military use through a firm, fair and impartial verification system. At the same time, nuclear science and technology have enormous benefits for humankind and should be shared more widely. Through the Agency, these benefits support energy and food security, healthcare and environmental protection around the world. Today, we are here because we have one job to do: to ensure that the NPT and the IAEA remain strong, not in spite of today’s turmoil, but precisely because of it.  #RevCon #NPTRevCon

IAEA has been informed by the ZNPP that a drone strike this morning killed a driver at its transport workshop in the vicinity of the plant site. DG @rafaelmgrossi reiterates that strikes on or near NPPs can endanger nuclear safety and must not take place. The IAEA’s team on the site will look into the incident and continue to monitor the situation.

Today I was at Chornobyl NPP, 40 years after the accident and on my 14th visit to Ukraine. Here is my message.

Forty years after the Chornobyl accident, it is a moment to remember, to reflect and to strengthen our commitment to nuclear safety. At the “Restoring Nuclear Safety” conference with 🇺🇦 President @ZelenskyyUa, 🇲🇩 President @sandumaiamd and @EBRD’s @OdileRenaud, I stressed that safety can never be taken for granted and recalled how the accident led to global cooperation and a safety culture that defines the nuclear field today. Chornobyl is not history. It is a living responsibility. The @IAEAorg has been with Chornobyl since 1986 and remains there today, supporting nuclear safety and security now in the shadow of war, including works to repair to the New Safe Confinement.
