Hi. Meteorologist here.
You’re going to lose that class action suit because you failed high school science.

Ready for a class action lawsuit? I am.

@MagnumAoV @JayB7897 @WeatherOwen Exactly. I wish the officials would better explain it and/or break it down into subcategories rather than the blanket one size fits all. It's a misrepresentation of what's really going on, and I understand why many people on here feel the way they do about it.
English

@mfdwx @JayB7897 @WeatherOwen I wish there were pro/official sources that would explain it similar to this, as it makes a hell of a lot more sense then just throwing out a map with “we are in a drought “ after 40 inches of snow melt and a 2 inch rain storm. The devil is in the details so to speak
English

@JayB7897 @WeatherOwen Fwiw, I think the way it's calculated should be change, or at least broken down better. It's possible to have drought in some ways, but not in others at the same time.. and this is what's happening now. It's not fake, it's just misrepresented.
English

@JayB7897 @WeatherOwen Did you not read what I wrote? Lol. It's not about what you see, but what's going on deep below. It's simply not a black and white metric.
English

You guys are ridiculous.. lol. I was looking at the precip anomaly for the past 365 days, and other than some localized areas, SNE is running a 5-10" deficit. This is part of the reason for the drought. But more over, 9 out of the last 15 years have been below normal, as such we're running a long-term deficit. It's not just about what's happened recently.
As for all that snow cover that "melted", a lot of that didn't really melt, but rather sublimated.. remember all the fog? So not all of that went into the ground.
Now with all that said, drought means different things depending on the metric. In terms of water levels in area lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, etc.. they benefit more from recent events and thus are in pretty good shape.
However, deep ground water tables are likely a completely different story. This would potentially impact people that rely on wells, etc.
Just some context here. I'm sure it'll do nothing to change anyone's mind.. lol

From volunteer to Chief Observer
Cecilia “Cece” Borries-Strigle rose through the ranks at BHO, becoming Chief Observer within a year of joining the staff (2016–2017).
Now a postdoc at UAF, her journey is a powerful example of passion and dedication in science.

@MarcHurBoston @growingwisdom Yes, officially 81mph! But we have 13 different wind systems up here, various sources are getting data any of our different systems, so it gets confusing. I will always only post our official measurements!
English

@growingwisdom @mfdwx you had a wind gust measurement up there that was slightly higher, right?

🌬️ Powerful overnight storm brought historic winds to the observatory.
• 3/16 peak gust: 71 mph
• 3/17 peak gust: 81 mph ⚠️ (NEW RECORD, prev: 70 mph in 1973)
• Max sustained: 51 mph
• Rainfall: 1.45”
Strongest wind gust for this date in records dating back to 1885. #BOSwx

@Keithwxtech That would be awesome if you can! Thank you for the offer!
English

@mfdwx I might have a ventus x (lufft) laying around, let me see if it is repairable and we can part with it. They have their own quirks, but at least won't overspeed by 30+% in upward angle of attack winds
English

I can assure you the 105mph on the South Tower Davis is not correct. Due to it's location on that tower, it gets enhanced by aerodynamics around the tower with a south wind and reads way too high. Nonetheless, it appears the official gust is around 80mph. I'll be heading up there shortly!
