KEEP SHOWING UP. Even on the days when your patience runs thin and your energy’s running on fumes. Keep showing up, not because it’s easy, but because it matters. Your students don’t need perfection; they need presence. They need to see that even grown-ups have hard days and still choose to care. They need to know that consistency is another word for love. And one day, you’ll look back and realize you didn’t just teach them, but left them better than you found them… simply because you showed up. — Dr. Brad Johnson #Room212

CONNECT BEFORE YOU CORRECT As leader, team member, parent or coach you often have to correct team members. You must correct their mistakes, so they don’t keep making them. You must correct the wrongs and make them right. But if you are always correcting without connecting, your team will see you as a problem instead of the solution. The key to correction is to create connection first. Connect before you correct. If correction arrives before connection, you will get burn-out instead of buy-in, disengagement instead of dedication, discouragement instead of drive, and resentment instead of results. But, if you connect before you correct and your team knows you hear them, see them, are with them and for them then you will earn the right to correct them. They will then get better because of you and for you. If your team knows you value them, care about them and have their best interest at heart they will be more open to your feedback. When they feel a connection, they will be more motivated to implement your correction. This is why it’s imperative to invest time and energy in developing a relationship with those that you lead. When you know them, you earn the right to show them how they can do things better. To put this habit into practice implement the 3 to 1 ratio of connection to correction interactions. Try to connect 3x as much as you correct. For every 3 interactions where you connect with a team member give yourself permission to have one interaction where you correct them. This doesn’t mean you have to connect with someone three times before you correct them. It just means that overall you spend three times more connecting than you do correcting. Try it for improved relationships, parenting, leadership, coaching and teamwork. Lead Positive, -Jon Suggested Resource: The 7 Commitments of a Great Team
