Zimbabwe is not short of technocrats, there are hundreds of eligible candidates for the post of Governor of Reserve Bank including the newly appointed Dr John Mushayavanhu , what it evidently has a shortage of , is Political will. Political will from the appointing authority, and from all of us . Hence we shall repeatedly echo this message , Fix the Politics, inorder to fix the Economy. You almost feel pity for each new appointment, they come in looking fresh , urbane and well meaning , thereafter the political initiation begins and the technocracy evaporates . Two decades ago we coopted this same Cde John Mushayavanhu into Zanu PF Masvingo Province as our Treasurer as part of renewal of the Province at the time , he attended three or so meetings maximum before he resigned. Clearly he was a misfit in those rowdy meetings called PECs or PCCs and one could not mistaken his disbelief as he sat at the top table watching political drama after drama. Now for this appointment the drama may not be there but his success will rise or fall on the altar of Executive intrusion & interference or the absence of it, which the President and Minister of Finance must guarantee .The RBZ succeeds on the back of its foundation of autonomy, a farfetched prospect under the current circumstances. So pinning our hopes on this John where the other John failed without an enabling political environmental context is playing the same LP record up to 2029 . The @CityofBulawayo faces a major water crisis. Our dams are terribly low and none of the rivers into them are flowing. This morning I inspected the Umzingwane river upstream of the Umzingwane dam and these are the photos I took. The river is bone dry - there aren’t even puddles. At this time of year one would expect at least puddles. The government urgently needs to declare Bulawayo as a water shortage area and we need urgent financial assistance to take a variety of short term remedial measures to mitigate the crisis. These include getting the Nyamandhlovu aquifer pumps up to full capacity (and then protecting them from theft), constructing a diversionary pipeline on the Mtshabezi pipeline direct to the Umzingwane pump station, upgrading the Inyankuni dam pump station and duplicating the pipeline from Insiza dam to Ncema water purification works. This needs to be done as a matter of extreme urgency. The BCC and local engineering companies have the capacity to do all of this but we need urgent financial assistance to do so.

After a series of meetings with McCormick Property Development (a SA company), which included a request made to them to redesign the Egodini vendors bays, we are pleased to report that substantial progress has been made and the project is now underway again. The redesign was to ensure that the Egodini vendors market will be fully roofed so as to provide protection to vendors, their customers and their wares. Egodini is a critical component of @CityofBulawayo ‘s need to decongest areas in the center of our City (including 5th Avenue) and the project has been bogged down. I am grateful for the new energy which has been injected by McCormick and now hopeful that this long outstanding project may now be completed.
