A highlight of the trip so far has been the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn. This immense collection of Americana is so bizarre but endlessly entertaining. The Henry Ford contains everything from the chair in which Lincoln was shot to, well, this:

I came here to see the scale of grassroots enthusiasm and organization. In this town in all-important Macomb County, you could feel the excitement of election season, but will it be enough to get voters to back Biden come November?

The Sterling Heights branch of the UAW was packed for tonight's " candidate speed dating", put on by the local Dem clubs ahead of state primaries (complete with donkey cookies and a cutout Whitmer).

For those who guessed 0, you are correct! Inflation, Gaza, Trump's personality and boredom with both candidates all came up, but not once did a reluctant voter mention Biden's mental fitness as a weakness. Just anecdotal evidence, but interesting to bear in mind.

Today I travelled up and down 8 Mile Road, attended community festivals in Oak Grove and Pontiac and spoke to locals about the election. My biggest surprise from today was how many (or few?) times they brought up Biden's age. Can you guess why?

Also at Eastern Market in Detroit, a very powerful symbol in 2024:

At Juneteenth celebrations in the heart of Detroit today, there was a strong sense of community spirit and a call to vote, but no one seemed happy with the choices. Most seemed willing to vote for Biden on Nov 5, but I heard more talk of third-party candidates and staying home.

@malfonsinlarsen Thanks Martin! Yes, many Black voters are unhappy, but local Democratic and nonpartisan organizers are working hard to turnout voters. The ones I see aren't excited to vote for Biden, but view him as their only viable choice. The phrase "lesser of two evils" comes up often.

@mhels596 Interesting - how did u square that with a lot of polling showing a potential exodus among Black voters? Even if the numbers went 75-25 Biden-Trump that could have seismic implications for his chances Also - so cool that u r doing this!

I was at another largely Black church, just 5 miles away, at the same time. But, the voters I spoke to were profoundly worried about what a second Trump term may bring. They acknowledge that Biden is imperfect but insist that he has greatly helped their communities.
