My first try with paper engineering. I need work on matching the sizes of under paintings but really feel it’s is worth the storytelling result. Inspired by Heather Clement’s workshops. #goodfire

Coming soon! My new book focuses specifically on good fire observations and journaling techniques. Smaller in size and pages. Content not in Pyrosketchology.

Here are a few of the my travel and nature journal pages from our visit to southern Arizona and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument that I have not yet shared.

I have been exploring ways to create maps for my travel journal and love the look of fantasy/game play maps. I am still struggling with sketching the scale of terrain elements, but adding the site banners and shields shows terrain, vegetaion, etc. #traveljournal #naturejournal

This didn’t come out the way I’d planned, but did capture some of the birds I’ve seen on the ocotillo blossoms over the past couple of weeks. #traveljournal #naturejournal #desertblooms #sonorandesert

@wildland_zko Great tips! Thanks. I like to create 3D block illustrations of landscapes which gives much more detail but takes a lot of work.

@mhmorrill I find it really helps to draw the drainage networks first, and then fill in the mountain ranges after that - it creates a nice shaded-relief feel. Also love drawing a top-down view and then shooting a low-angle oblique photo of that.

I had forgotten to share my nature journal pages from February. Here are some of the critter observations.

I wrapped up my #traveljournal pages from our visit to Quitobaquito Springs, Arizona from a few days ago. What a magical place at sunset and so easy to see a few rare and endangered species. #naturejournal

We leave Bisbee Arizona today. The old town has historic buildings, numerous murals, art galleries, museums, and restaurants. I rarely sketch buildings and urban settings but wanted to capture some of the scenes in my travel journal.

Chadron Formation of South Dakota early Oligocene, subtropical scene with Brontops and Merycoidodon. I researched every tree and plant as to fossil taxon. Oil on canvas mural for an exhibition that I did for Badlands National Park #paleoart

I wanted to create a journal page that was artistic and symbolic of the work of volunteers and NGOs supporting the hurricane and tropical storm disaster
relief efforts. Donations and volunteers converge to near superpowers.

We have only been at our new campsite for a couple of days and had some really awesome observations. We even got some video of the bats feeding (iPhone and thermal camera).

I am experimenting with some new weather journaling approaches this month. The temperature wheel is the same but I am not combing RH or other data. The general weather (cloudiness, etc.) graph and winds are pretty easy to create and update.

@LaurenStacho That is a gorgeous drive. You need to make it up to Cape Flattery in WA. I’ll have journal pages to share from there soon.

Catching up on sharing some of my travel journal pages along the Oregon coast.
