I chaired a fascinating, almost frighteningly synergistic panel on history and legacy of late 19th C European converts to Islam. Apologies that it was indeed a manel, though female scholars are amply featured at @MuslimsInBritRN #ConvertsConference

I did a study with one of our @CUHistArchRel undergrads on UK journalistic style guides and what they say about Muslims and Islam - well before @cfmmuk's guide was released. An article on that study was published last year in @JournalRMDC #OpenAccess brill.com/view/journals/…

I came a little late for the discussions but enjoyed meeting colleagues and carrying the @IslamUKCentre banner to the @CommunityGtwy Love Grangetown networking event today on campus. This is right up our alley!

There is a community there. It’s not perfect, but neither was Twitter when it was good, and now it ain’t good. I have the same username there. There are good people there, smart academics, funny people. Darth is there. You should come. You don’t even need an invite code.

I’m inspired by Hunter’s post. I lost my taste for Twitter since Musk took it over, conflicted about participating in it but hearing the arguments about it as a continuing space to resist. But the gains are low, the site sucks, and BlueSky has been more like the space I want.

Interesting that Bethan is sensitive to the moral panic over moral panics. This is helpful reflexivity as we study contemporary phenomena. I’m also amused at the idea of the Devil as folk devil. #SocRel24

Though there are UK examples, especially from the 90s, Bethan takes us through a history of the Satanic panic of the United States. Contrasting with more current concerns, the historical examples emerged out of interest groups. This shift is the focus of her paper. #SocRel24
