@EdwardJDavey Ed, where is this in the Budget document? I can’t find it. Can you say which page?

I wish I was surprised. Buried in this Budget is a plan to slash the Digital Services Tax, giving a multi-billion tax cut to US tech giants and the likes of Elon Musk. That's right, cutting taxes for the world's richest man while hiking them for millions of hard-working Brits.

So this COP30 thing. What’s it all about? As I am not really using X any more (for anti-Musk reasons), you’ll have to flip to Bluesky to get my take on the UN climate conferences and why they’re important. bsky.app/profile/michae…

What a lazy, cliched analysis this is! I stopped being an adviser to Gordon Brown 15 years ago. I am a professor of political economy at the University of Sheffield who analyses policy not through the lens of Labour disagreements of 15-25 years ago but from what I see now.

"It's pretty clear that old Blair-Brownite divison is re-emerging." Historic divides in the Labour party are coming back, says @AdamBoultonTABB, after Gordon Brown's former special adviser criticises Labour's benefits cuts. @KaitBorsay | @MichaeluJacobs | #TimesRadio

The bigger question is: who decided that the A38 was a single road from Bodmin to Mansfield? It’s obviously really a succession of many local roads. Presumably some MoT civil servant decided to give them all the same number; ditto for the A361 etc. Who? Why? When?

There are several roads which seem to be in the wrong zone - eg the A34 in Manchester, the A38 in Nottinghamshire, the A414 in Essex. But trace them back and they usually start in the ‘right’ zone: the A34 in Hampshire, the A38 in Devon; the A414 off the A41. 1/2

We urgently need to reform this short-termist fiscal framework so that our public finances can be truly sustainable. There are lots of suggestions out there from the likes of @instituteforgov , @NIESRorg , @CETEx_LSE , @IPPR , @NEF Hopefully govt looks seriously at these.

For those for whom 8,000 words is too many but 140 too few, may I offer the Goldilocks version of my Political Quarterly annual lecture - and journal article - on post-neoliberal economic policy. My conclusion is that… sorry I’ve run out of space. You’ll have to read it. @po_qu

Missed @michaelujacobs's incredible lecture last Autumn, 'After Neoliberalism: Economic Theory and Policy in the Polycrisis'? The #DigestedRead is now available, summarising his argument in just 2000 words. Don't miss it: politicalquarterly.org.uk/blog/after-neo…

Our Director, Meg Russell, was a special adviser to Robin Cook as Leader of the Commons in the early 2000s. On this @SPERIshefuni podcast she discusses the work of the 1997 Modernisation Committee and why "good scrutiny leads to good government" 👉 shows.acast.com/speri-presents….
