This giant statue made entirely from 100,000 knives has been installed in Southend High Street! The Knife Angel is a 27-foot, 3.5-tonne sculpture. It was created to highlight knife crime in the country and educate young people on the harmful effect violent behaviour can have on their communities. In order to create the sculpture, 200 knife banks and amnesties were held for individuals to anonymously donate their knives. Knives seized by police were also included, some of which arrived in evidence tubes still with blood on their surface. The city of Southend will officially welcome the statue with a public opening ceremony on Monday 1st July at 10am led by the Mayor of Southend. The event will bring together community safety partners such as the High Sheriff for Essex, Southend-on-Sea City Council, Essex Police, and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, together with ambulance service and NHS colleagues.

With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.
