Update: I resigned from Cascade PBS today, as my mother needs more treatment for pancreatic cancer before they can try surgery. I don’t think I’ll be back to WA before the august primaries. But I will return to Olympia when the cosmos permit.

Delighted to be spending a couple of days @seattletimes home to awesome Ducks like @michmflo @ryannguy_n @smaemccullough @dahliabazzaz @levipulk and others, as well as a hub for great journalism and an outlet I have long followed (and often written about) as they chart a path from print to becoming a digital + subscription-led business. For @sojcagora I have also been fortunate to feature insights from @seattletimes leaders in my research over the years. This includes a 2017 report on "Local Journalism in the Pacific Northwest: Why It Matters, How It’s Evolving and Who Pays For It" which featured interviews with former Managing Editor @jsimon88, and @sharonpianchan previously the Vice President of Innovation, Product, & Development at the ST, and now Deputy, Newsroom Culture & Careers @nytimes agorajournalism.center/research/new-a… More recently, @lynnjacobson The Seattle Times' managing editor was one of 10 PNW newsroom leaders featured in this cross-cutting 2019 study on "Shifting Practices for a Stronger Tomorrow: Local Journalism in the Pacific Northwest." agorajournalism.center/research/shift… Having a lot of fun updating my knowledge of all the great things The Seattle Times is doing, and what that means for @UOsojc students, faculty and the journalism industry as a whole. 🙏 for hosting us!

I was told yesterday that my position as the staff photographer at Crosscut would be eliminated. Me and four others in the newsroom are being laid off. I’m very proud of the hard work my coworkers and I have done together. This is really an incredible loss to our community.

At Allied Media Legislative Day in Olympia, WA Chief Justice Steven Gonzalez just thanked the media and specifically Seattle Times reporter David Gutman for “always getting it right” in writing about justice issues.

Four weeks ago, my wife and I became parents to two unbelievably sweet twin boys. Since then, I've experienced a new level of love, joy and, yes, fatigue. They've changed me in expected and unexpected ways, and I can easily say they're the best thing that's ever happened to me.

After 25 years at AP (nearly 18 covering #waleg in Olympia!), I’m off to try something new. Starting Nov. 28, I’ll be a West Coast-based editor for Axios Local. I’ll miss my AP colleagues and the statehouse crew, but excited to work with the great group of journalists at @axios
