A few weeks ago in Cleveland, I asked Kevin Dresser if he’d ever not be around wrestling. He didn’t hesitate. He said no. He’d always be around in some capacity. A month later, he’s stepping away from the corner and into a new role as Director of Wrestling. My career started on day one of the Dresser era. I was a deer in headlights as an intern, just trying to get my foot in the door. I didn’t know what I was doing yet, and he never shut the door. He let me sit in his office, ask too many questions and figure it out as I went. Over time, that turned into a working relationship I’ve always respected, one that’s shaped how I cover this sport. Covering wrestling is unlike any other sport, in the best way. Somewhere along the way, I went from being too nervous to ask a question to getting a direct call out if I don’t ask enough. I’ve watched him build a program, develop athletes and make people care about wrestling again in Ames. Old school, tough and demanding, but also one of the most adaptable coaches I’ve been around and one of the most open with media. I’ve appreciated every bit of covering him all nine years of his time as head coach, learning his rhythms and understanding the sport through his lens. Thank you @CYWrestle_KD, as a reporter and as a fan of the sport. Your impact will always be held among the best! I look forward to this next chapter.
