@No1zhome @Edaphosaurus The story of both Iliad and Odyssey was written (or codifed) at earliest in c. 8th century bc. It doesn't describe the reality of 13th century bc. Only how Greeks understood it through the lenses of their own time. As for how these stories correspond with history, we have no clue

The period this myth occurred was real as you and I. Using the based on a myth excuse is just lazy as heck. It appears that Troy was real and archeological evidence points to a war. So why not use existing evidence in pottery to help with costume design? Give some credibility to the yarn! Mind you since this occurred in 1250 or so BC, the only tangible evidence is pottery, burials, a few ruins and some literature, not a lot survived. But archeologists have a decent idea of the “costumes” of the era.

@BretDevereaux The large majority of free people in the Roman empire were peregrini, not citizens, right? Wouldn't it be fair to call these people second class citizens?

This notion -the Romans had tiers of citizenship based on ethnicity- keeps coming up. I have no idea where from, but it is mostly wrong before 87 BC; entirely wrong afterwards. Citizenship attached fully regardless of origin; Romans could be snobby bigots but their law was not.
James 👑@TTJamesG

The Romans had tiers of citizenship. The primary way they maintained a big empire was by allowing local cultures to keep their identities as long as they paid taxes to the empire and stayed in line. They also used trade to enrich themselves with resources otherwise unavailable to them. This does not mean that a Jew living in Israel was considered a Roman citizen to be valued the same as an ethnic Roman in Italy.

@Brimmer__ @HalifaxGreg1066 @Tom_Rowsell It does need to represent anything. And by representing the birth of Jesus it leads people to a wrong conclusion that Jesus was born that year while at the same time he could be born between 12bc and 6ad. What it was supposed to represent doesn't matter now anyways.

@Tom_Rowsell Idk In Russia we actually use an equivalent to BCE/CE (до нашей эры/нашей эры), so i find yhos bc/ad stuff pretty weird. Not to mention the birth of Christ didn't happen in year 0, but rather between c. 12bc and 6ad, which sound schizophrenic to me.
