People in Japan are, on average, older than in America or other comparable jurisdictions (here's a video explaining the issue in South Korea, but the math is the same in Japan youtube.com/watch?v=lmoZ_W…). By the time the sweep was done, over 9500 of the buyers of the 9,900+ redeemed, leaving a few hundred who clearly were having difficulty completing the transaction. There was a commercial liability for completing the redemption of voucher addresses in the genesis block. If the buyer couldn't reasonably use that method, there was a moral obligation to change the redemption mechanism. The people who keep talking about this issue have absolutely no understanding of Japanese law or even the ownership of the voucher UTXOs in the Genesis block. The TGE and Attain were responsible for ensuring the voucher addresses were redeemed and would have indeed been sued if they had abandoned that obligation. When Attain went out of business, there was also no way of knowing if KYC data was compromised by mishandling or malicious intent. Given that the AVVM process gave the TGE, combined with Attain, sufficient data to rebuild the voucher address as part of the original recovery process, this meant that the process was no longer secure. The critics (apparently including the CF from their self-inflicted tweet) with absolutely no context or understanding are suggesting that the entity with ownership over the UTXOs and a legal and moral obligation to complete or refund transactions should abandon its duty to a group of people who were most vulnerable and also declare to the entire world that an insecure process now exists to steal their money on-chain. They are also suggesting that these forgotten addresses should forever be in Cardano, creating technical debt for every wallet and full node. They are suggesting it was done unilaterally, which is also not true, given that a hardfork required two of the three genesis keyholders to initiate. Also, the first step occurred in 2020, and the following year in 2021, when the new process was ready, given that it took time to build it and sign up regulated actors to facilitate. No one (including the CF) seemed to complain during that year. No one seemed to have an issue when the Genesis keyholders conducted hard forks for everything from adding staking to the ITN payout to enabling smart contracts. But then, changing a redemption mechanism on behalf of the UTXOs' owner and removing an insecure and burdensome feature apparently violates some special principle? It's absurd, goal-post-moving doublespeak because the core argument has already been lost: Ada was not stolen. The headlines and articles don't discuss any of this or ask us for context. They said, "MAJOR ALLEGATIONS THAT 600 MILLION DOLLARS OF ADA WAS STOLEN ON CARDANO". It's disgusting and damaging. Every party that passively allowed it to happen or contributed to it has harmed every builder and holder in the Cardano ecosystem. This story is actually one of heroes who went above and beyond the call of duty to help people they had no legal obligation to assist, who had been abandoned and forgotten by people who had a duty and left. Again, 99.8 percent of the buyers redeemed either through the pre- or post-sweep mechanism. A lot of people and organizations' character is on trial right now. As this event unfolds, we learn who has integrity and who is a coward. We see who's honest and who isn't. As painful as it is, governance must reach the next level. You all must decide on your next leaders and how much power to give them. Use this event wisely.
