June 8, 1998. I was coming from the sawmill, a sack of sawdust on my back, when the news broke! General Sani Abacha was dead. I think it was in the afternoon (although I later learned he died in the morning) I was living in Otta, Ogun State. The streets erupted. People were dancing, jumping, praising God for the death of a dictator! Nigeria wasn’t just in abject poverty!! it was a military regime. Nigerians were ruled by someone who weaponized death, torture, and jail terms to silence anyone who spoke against him. And now, that same dictator is being compared to NADECO? The people who stood and stared death in the face to deliver the democracy that the fool Peter Obi is enjoying today? OYA NA!
