Likewise in some countries, affirming care continues to be illegal, which means there’s plenty ways evidence of a new treatment could arise. Hell in the US affirming care wasn’t the default until almost 2010!

@ThisAccountFell @kaybnuuy @datadriven_tdoc My issue is that this tight grasp on the current treatment as the only right way prevents the possibility of other pathways arising. In fact, any attempt at a different path is met with vitriol and claims that it is increasing the trans suicide rate.

That we wouldn’t take a bit of therapy instead of a fucking surgery if we could? When there’s a different treatment, we can discuss a different treatment.

@ThisAccountFell @kaybnuuy @datadriven_tdoc I would also be interested in seeing the data on regret rates so I can look thru. Nose jobs are performed vastly more than affirming surgery. And nose jobs can also be considered gender affirming surgery. In fact most cosmetic procedures can.

@middlechild666 @kaybnuuy @datadriven_tdoc The central point of dysmorphia is that it’s not eased by external intervention bc it’s a distortion of your own perception. Nose jobs have a higher regret rate than affirming surgery btw, and famously cosmetic procedures tend to create repetition.

It was still based on gender stereotypes. My stance is that any person of any sex can look and act however they want, medicalization isn’t necessary.

It’s an overview of why we started using affirming care, since patients didn’t respond to any of the treatments they tried to “fix their brain”. @kaybnuuy @ThisAccountFell @datadriven_tdoc I’m glad you feel better because of the treatment you received. Doctors have to weigh benefits vs drawback for everything they prescribe. The current framework is that the physiological harm of hrt is not as important as the psychological benefits. I disagree with that

I still think people shouldn’t get cosmetic nose jobs because the entire industry reinforces what “good” or “bad” features look like. Which is racist, etc.

That doesn’t mean I can’t be critical of cosmetic procedures for reinforcing gender stereotypes in the name of psychologically soothing people

@middlechild666 @kaybnuuy @datadriven_tdoc I still have other things that bother me since I’m not on hormones (just starting, trying cautiously) and I don’t have bottom surgery; but I can say my top surgery did in fact cure my chest dysphoria. I have no further plans for it, it’s perfect for me now.

I said im critical of the source, bias, and methodological aspects of information I take in as absolutely everyone should be. I don’t immediately trust anything. You can argue against it by not trying to create a straw man.
