@The__Cooler @Coach_GotJuice @NetsKingdomAJ I don't see one. Very good players? Yes, but it's largely a crapshoot. But it's happened before. Giannis, SGA mid-first round, Jokic second round, etc. (Fun fact: Mikal Bridges, DiVincenzo, and Landry Shamet all selected ahead of Jalen Brunson in 2018.)

@JacManuell Like all GMs Marks has made mistakes but he inherited a broken squad with no assets and had them in the playoffs in two years. Assembled the Big 3 (no one was complaining then) but two were joined at the hip and volatile. Got most of the picks back from Harden deal. Not bad.

I’m curious to know from people who are Sean Marks believers and those who think he should be fired. I personally am surprised he’s been able to retain his position so long despite his mistakes but I also acknowledge some external stuff out of his control. Thoughts?

@WiltStats Not to mention playing in arenas (and recovering in locker rooms) where a lot of people were *smoking*, flying commercial, no year round AAU or other ball coming up, stiff ass rims, no personal trainer/chef, etc

Many basketball fans judge 1960s athleticism based on old highlights, pointing to "stiff" dribbling and a lack of explosive drives. But that wasn't a lack of physical ability—it was strict officiating. • Zero Tolerance for Carrying: You couldn't place your hand anywhere near the side or bottom of the ball. Players were forced to push the ball strictly from the top, which fundamentally limited their change-of-direction speed and crossover ability. • Strict Offensive Fouls: Lowering a shoulder or initiating contact meant an immediate whistle. You couldn't simply bulldoze your way down the lane like Giannis does today. The truth is, if you dropped modern superstars into the 1960s, their signature explosive drives wouldn't just be whistled down—they wouldn't exist in the first place. Players only develop and practice the skills that the rules allow them to use. You can't romanticize modern athleticism without acknowledging that today's wide-open style is a direct result of a drastically loosened rulebook.

Shoutout to those 5'10" chain-smoking plumbers who apparently managed to stretch themselves to an average height of 6'6" just for game days. Centers in 1962 averaged 6'10.5". Centers in 2020 averaged 6'10.9". The overall league average height for both eras? Exactly 6'6".

Julius Randle is a strong offseason fit for the Brooklyn Nets as they build a tougher identity in the East. After his run with the Minnesota Timberwolves alongside Anthony Edwards, Randle would bring scoring, physicality, and half-court stability to the Nets’ offense.

@_k_3424 Mine are 1) parting ways with Atkinson, 2) Jacque Vaughn, 3) lack of size at the 5. 4) could be going for the quick fix (in retrospect) but I understand wanting to carve out some space in NYC. I just hope that never happens again. I'm good with Marks running the rebuild.

My beef with Sean Marks * Trading Jarret Allen (but I understood) * Interviewing Tyronn and hiring Steve Nash (not over that one) * Not trading Kyrie as soon as he refused the vax * Extending jacque Vaughn (I kind of got that though - stability) Otherwise he's been very good

@BillyReinhardt The Sixers owe 36 y.o. oft-injured Paul George and Joel Embiid a combined $300m over the next three seasons. Embiid missed his first two seasons with injury, played 31 next season, never played 70 games and played 39 the season before the $188 mil extension. That gets you fired.

@ShamsCharania Owing about $230 million to Embiid (basically finished) and Paul George (at 36/37 years old) over the next two seasons and another $69 million to Embiid in 2028-29 will get you fired. Just a hunch.

@BillyReinhardt You are correct, but the Nets are well within the range to draft a superstar, we just have no idea who the superstars will be. Many of today's top players were drafted well beyond the top five. Fit, development, and more come into play. The Nets should trade down and go big.

One more on this dilemma… I get it — Brooklyn fans are disappointed with a second consecutive crushing lottery fall. The hope was a homegrown superstar for the first time in forever. Unfortunately, the reality is that the Nets are very likely no longer selecting in a range where a potential superstar will be. Have to acknowledge that rather than desperately shooting for the highest upside piece like Darius Acuff Jr. that has a 1% chance of being Damian Lillard or Derrick Rose. You need a superstar to win. I believe we should all acknowledge that the Nets will have no choice but to look externally for that superstar down the road. That said, the Nets should aim to build up a core of versatile players that fits a variety of different potential superstar players, accumulating a bunch of winning versatile pieces that have value around the league. Drafting someone like Acuff, who is very polarizing and requires a very specific way of team building, could limit the Nets’ flexibility moving forward.
Billy Reinhardt@BillyReinhardt

Unless a player hits the top 1% outcome of one-way scoring guards, we’ve seen what really good fringe All-Star type one-way guards like Trae Young, Ja Morant, and De’Aaron Fox are worth on the market. This is a league where wing inflation is at an all-time high. Look at Mikal Bridges, Desmond Bane, OG Anunoby etc. Why use a premium asset on a one-way scoring guard when the pathway to that player having value is so much more narrow than the pathway for a two-way player with more size to garner value?

@The__Cooler What do you think about Mikel Brown for the Nets at six? I've really only seen highlights but will find some full games to watch. My only concern is the back issue. If he's really around 6'5" it seems like he'd be a fit for them.

I’d expect Brooklyn to be heavily involved in the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes this summer, if they weren’t planning to be already, given today’s lottery outcome. Brooklyn is a long way away from a title team but has the assets and flexibility to try to convince Antetokounmpo this summer that a title contender can be built shortly. With the Nets at #6 and the Bucks at #10, a swap of picks would make sense in any discussion as well as additional future draft capital from Brooklyn’s end.

The Brooklyn Nets deadass had horrendous rosters two years in a row and got rewarded with 6th and 8th overall picks. How exactly are they supposed to build their way out of this barring drafting an extreme outlier. Lottery system sucks.

@APOOCH Not sweating it. They should get a good piayer. Can't remember a draft where a redraft would yield the same results. They can't drop below 7, so if they don't like their spot they can make a deal. My only prediction is that at least one of Chicago, Dallas, or GS moves to top 3.
