May 2025 Im outside waxing my boat. Super excited because I just got it back from the shop after having a new engine installed. I’m 68 in good shape. Worked all day and felt fine. That night in bed I woke up in excruciating pain in my right hand and it’s swollen like I had slept on it and cut off circulation. The pain was so bad I couldn’t bear it so my wife drove me to the ER. ER doctor diagnosed it as acute tendonitis and prescribed a 5 day supply of Prednisone. Hand started feeling great and swelling subsided but swelling and pain came back after the pill supply was exhausted. Now I go see my primary care doctor. He diagnosed gout and prescribed more pills for that. It’s not working. I go back again to my Primary doctor. He really doesn’t know so he prescribes a longer dosage of Prednisone and orders X rays. The X rays confirm arthritis. Same rinse and repeat with the Prednisone and the swelling and pain are back again with a vengeance. From there it was seeing a hand specialist and a shot of cortisone in the wrist “that should clear it up in a week” the doctor says. No change at all. Still pain and swelling. By now Im very concerned. My hand looks more like a flipper and Ive been having to wipe my ass with my left hand for months and cant even write or tie my shoes. My primary doctor gives me another huge prescription for Prednisone and orders a MRI. Same result after the Prednisone and the MRI confirms osteoarthritis. But still no confirmation what caused the issue. My wife and daughter doing their own sleuthing think it could be rheumatoid arthritis and I did have a marker for it from my last blood test. I’m increasingly desperate for a confirmed diagnosis and treatment. Around that time, I read an article by midwestern doctor on X about DMSO. I’m intrigued but not sold I should do it. My wife tells me “don’t do it” even after reading the article info I forwarded to her. I then go to see a Rheumatologist. Dr. says you may have rheumatoid arthritis but I’m not sure. But I can suggest a few different prescriptions that may work. Kind of a multiple choice what do you want to take. I said let’s go with hydroxychloroquine. I’ve heard it effective for treating other stuff. Before I leave the appointment I ask the Dr. “have you ever heard of DMSO?” Dr. says “oh no, don’t do that”. That’s it. No other explanation. Nothing. I start taking the HCQ but not seeing a difference and I’m feeling worse. Now major swelling has crept into my left foot. So I have no use of my right dominant hand and now having trouble walking. I’m tired of taking all the medications that haven’t worked and clueless doctors. So now I. Real down and order a bottle of 99% pure DMSO from Amazon. A $20 purchase. I start applying it at night before bed but notice it’s irritating my skin and my foot looks wrinkled and shriveled. But I keep applying it. At this point I have nothing to lose and I’m desperate for any kind of relief. 2 weeks into nightly applications I start realizing drastic change. The swelling has almost completely subsided along with the pain. I keep the applications going another 2 weeks and the symptoms are completely gone. Over a year later and no issues since. I have full function of my hand and foot again. Amazing! I owe everything to the midwestern doctor and the detailed info he provided about DMSO. Truly a miracle and life changing.

@TomStep77496489 The FDA approved it for IC at the time of the 1980 hearing so they could claim they weren't stonewalling it. Since then, no sole DMSO product has been FDA approved (only combos). However the 1994 DSHEA act took away the FDA's ability to regulate DMSO, effectively legalizing it.

@MidwesternDoc The FDA has rolled back its position on DMSO. The FDA has approved DMSO as a prescription medication for treating symptoms of painful bladder syndrome and, under medical supervision, for other conditions such as shingles.
