I started this business to help address the structural imbalance of power between highly paid listed company execs and the retail investors who want to understand and participate in the markets. Writing straightforward opinions and raising concerns about companies that engage appropriately and respectively (i.e. the vast majority of them) is much easier than writing similar views on companies that engage very poorly and even resort to threats and intimidation. Of course, the "easy" outcome is that respectful management teams then suffer, while bullies are allowed to behave however they want. That's a terrible outcome for the integrity of the @JSE_Group market and any global market. This is by no means the first time that I've experienced this, but it's certainly been the most concerning. Nonetheless, this business has grown to 40,000 daily opens of Ghost Mail and there's a reason for that. People want and need my help in understanding the market around them. For university students to C-suite execs, Ghost Mail has become a critical resource. So today, just like every other weekday, I got out of bed to write South Africa's favourite investment newsletter. And I'll keep doing it, regardless of how irritating it sometimes is.

Warren, you’re my hero! There’s no doubt that equities is your best bet to overcoming the malevolent acts of inflation. In the chart below, you can see how equities (dividends reinvested) have delivered just over 7% real since the Bretton Woods agreement 80 odd years ago. That’s before adding alpha through active management. In the chart below I tag on Berkshire Hathaway’s return to the Dow Jones at the time (1988) BlackRock came into existence, to emphasize the importance of injecting active equity management into your investment process.

Real earnings yield has just flipped positive .. but are we out of the woods? Over the last 30 years the EY on the S&P has averaged 4.5% vs inflation of 2.5%. If inflation only gets down to 2.5%, EY will need to rise from current 4.26% to 4.5%, which it might do on earnings .. but that means no prospect of any capital appreciation. Not to mention, the equity markets generally sell off during a recession induced cutting cycle. Caution is required.

@mikemoore2 When we start measuring those EPS estimates falling at increasing rates. Since the market bottom on 10/12/22, estimates have been cut but at decreasing rates. This is bullish. However, once the improving trends stop, a rise in the market multiple will no longer be justified.

Did you know S&P 500 EPS growth expectations have been falling almost every single day? This is not a reason alone to be bearish, but it does mean all future stock gains will require more multiple expansion. $SPY
