Super Mario, one of the most beloved video game characters of all time, was named after a real person.
In 1981, when the character first appeared in Nintendo’s arcade hit Donkey Kong, he was simply called “Jumpman.” At the time, Nintendo of America was renting a warehouse in Tukwila, Washington, from a local landlord named Mario Segale.
According to multiple accounts, Segale once showed up demanding overdue rent from Nintendo’s president, Minoru Arakawa. The tense exchange reportedly inspired the developers to rename their mustachioed hero after their no-nonsense Italian-American landlord.
Segale’s short, stocky build and dark hair also perfectly matched the image Nintendo had in mind for the character. Years later, in a 1993 interview with The Seattle Times, Segale jokingly remarked, “You might say I’m still waiting for my royalty checks.”
Mario Segale passed away in 2018 at the age of 84, but his name continues to live on through one of gaming’s most iconic figures.

Google Chrome is quietly downloading a roughly 4 GB AI model to many users’ computers without clear upfront consent.
The file, called weights.bin, is part of Google’s Gemini Nano on-device language model and lands in the browser’s user data folder under OptGuideOnDeviceModel.
It powers built-in AI tools such as “Help me write,” smarter tab suggestions, on-device scam detection, and page summarization. The download triggers automatically for devices meeting minimum hardware requirements, and Chrome often replaces the files if deleted.
While the model processes data locally, installation happens in the background with minimal notification.
The scale is noteworthy. Hundreds of millions or billions of installations add up to thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions globally from data transfer, even though each is a one-time event.
To prevent or remove it, go to chrome://flags, disable the entries for the optimization guide on-device model and Prompt API, restart the browser, and manually delete the folder.

AMD’s market cap had now risen 65x from $10B to $650B+ since Sky Sports asked Lisa Su if she could “speak English” at the starting grid during 2018 F1 Chinese Grand Prix.
Bearly AI@bearlyai
AMD popped +17% after earnings on the strength of quarterly data centre revenues hitting $5.8B (+57% YoY). Su says that the rise of AI agents means the ratio of CPU-to-GPU could shift from 1:8 to 1:1 (with some agentic deployments needing more CPUs than GPUs).

THIS COULD BE THE MOST OVERVALUED MARKET IN HUMAN HISTORY.
The Wilshire 5000 to GDP ratio just hit a record 226%, far exceeding the peaks of the 2000 Dot-com bubble and the 2007 financial crisis. We are currently trading at double the historical mean, a level of divergence never seen in over 50 years of data.
Every major market peak in modern history has been followed by a violent return to the mean.
While the 2000 bubble peaked near 140%, the current market has pushed nearly 80% higher than that legendary collapse.
The gap between economic output and equity prices has never been wider.

56 years ago today, the Kent State massacre unfolded, where four students were killed and nine others were wounded for protesting the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War.
Instead of universal outrage at the murder of innocent students, there were voices saying that they were sorry “they didn’t killed more.” These weren’t one off, fringe voices. They were part of a broader climate that cast student protestors as threats rather than people exercising their right to dissent.
It’s hard not to hear echoes today. The language might be different, but the logic is the same: delegitimize dissent, frame students as dangerous, and make state repression seem like the reasonable and obvious solution.

While playing in his backyard, 8-year-old Hugo Deans noticed tiny, BB-sized spheres near an ant nest. He assumed they were seeds — but they were actually oak galls, protective growths created by tiny wasps that lay eggs inside oak leaves.
What happened next stunned scientists.
Researchers discovered that ants were actively collecting these galls and carrying them back to their nests, exactly as they do with seeds in a behavior called myrmecochory. The galls contain a special fatty cap rich in the same chemical signals (elaiosomes) that ants normally seek in seeds. The ants eat this nutritious “reward” and leave the developing wasp larva inside the gall unharmed.
In essence, the wasps have evolved a clever way to hijack the plant-ant seed dispersal system, tricking ants into protecting and transporting their offspring.
This remarkable three-way interaction between oak trees, gall wasps, and ants had completely escaped scientific notice for over a century. The discovery, sparked by a curious child, challenges long-standing assumptions about how these species interact and shows how complex ecological relationships can evolve independently in nature.

This is absolutely insane.
SanDisk has gone from $30 to $1,400+ in 14 months.
That’s a 4,600% return, and the #1 stock in the S&P 500 for two years running.
Most people missed it.
Here’s why it happened:
Western Digital spun off SanDisk in February 2025 as a separate pure-play NAND flash company.
Then AI hit the storage market.
Hyperscalers started signing multi-year supply agreements at $42 billion in committed revenue.
NAND prices are up 70-75% on AI data center demand.
Gross margins went from 51% to 78%.
Revenue grew 251% YoY in the latest quarter.
The market finally realized AI doesn’t just need GPUs.
It needs storage, memory, power, cooling.
The lesson here is simple:
The biggest gains never come from chasing the obvious names.
They come from finding the pure-play that nobody is paying attention to before the market connects the dots.
If I find the next one, it will be posted on @InTheAssembly
