@ana_mitric In Bulgaria, I still communicate to all my high school teachers for example using "vi" instead of "ti", especially in front of others. It's a sign of appreciation and respect to the profession in some instances. If he meets you in the hotel lobby, it will be "ti" most likely.

So, I’m almost taken aback when Novak uses the second-person formal with me (in Serbian, “vi” vs “ti”—I’m sure those in 🇫🇷 & 🇪🇸 can recognize the equivalent in their languages). Based on my experience, I’d guess he does this with most older people as a sign of respect. (2/x)

Following up on this observation from last week, Novak’s formality in Serbian always comes as a bit of a surprise to me. This could be because I was born in one of the least formal places on earth (the US, generally, and California, specifically). (1/x)
