I feel like we hate on this kind of clandestine experimentation a little too much. I get the original situations that motivated the taboo we have today, but if you reanalyze the situation from today's context it feels like I would rather be secretly manipulated in random directions for the sake of science than eg. secretly manipulated to get me to buy a product or change my political view? The latter two are 100x worse, and if the former helps us understand and counteract the latter, and it's done in a public open-data way where we can all benefit from the data and analysis, that's a net good? Though I'd also be ok with an easy-to-use open standard where individual users can opt in to these kinds of things being tried on them and people who don't want to be part of it can stay out.
