If you’re shopping in the UK (or anywhere else that isn’t America) you can now enjoy 30% off The Virginia Venture: American Colonization & English Society, 1580-1660 🙌🏽 Which makes it the price of around 5 🍺, 10 ☕️, 3 🍕 or 20 🥑

@tonsmit So yes, the publicly funded bit of my research (the PhD) is available for free, the book, which builds on & expands the thesis, & which was not publicly funded, is not.

@mishaewen I was only reacting to the text on Tseg. I read the abstract and found the subject interesting. I've read al lot about this period. I never said I read the book. I would like to, but the price is a hurdle. My point is that academic historical research should be affordable.

In England, colonization was not exclusively an affair of the male educated elite. @mishaewen argues for the inclusion of individuals across the whole social spectrum to fully understand colonizing enterprises. Read @JorisvandenTol s review in TSEG tseg.nl/article/view/1…

@tonsmit In the UK if a PhD is publicly funded (as mine was) you can get the PhD for free, but unfortunately unless you get a grant (to develop the thesis) which allows for open access publishing then we have to follow the costs set by the publishers - some, like Penn, are non-profits.

@tonsmit Your tweet is certainly “interesting” in that you’re assuming to know things about my research background & argument without knowing me or even having read the book.

@_tseg @mishaewen @JorisvandenTol @IISG_Amsterdam @PennPress Interesting. But absolutely nobody ever said that colonization was exclusively an affair of the male educated elite. Research funded by public means should be available for free or at a low price. Not S$ 49,95 for 224 pages (Ebook same, crazy). The Virginia Venture Misha Ewen

@TheEcoAlchemyst Both sound brilliant, thanks so much - in fact the particular topic is Virginia so that seems extremely relevant!

A question for Early Modernists: are there any records of what Londoners or English people thought of expansion/colonisation in the 16th/17th cs? Contemporary reactions, responses? Not sure where to look!

In #Poitiers for the @OIEAHC conference w/ @mishaewen & @susannah_lw and can this city be any more charming? The air is fragrant with incense and honeysuckle and there are medieval and Renaissance buildings at every turn.

@HistoryHannahB @ChampsCampUK My grandad was a boxer in the late 60s - I think probably training at the same gym because think that was where all the Black Caribbean young boxers went? So great you’re doing this research.

totally dreamy day exploring Ham House with @MsKerryApps and @mishaewen, talking 17th century women and global objects. Came for the paintings & cabinets but left with a new obsession with the brocaded reclining nap chairs.

My daughter using her period tracker to work out which of her A level exams she's gonna be in pain for. Never seen a single mention of this factor in any discussion of exams anywhere

@JuliaLaite I wonder if Alison Games’s work on massacre & the Amboyna Massacre specifically would be helpful? Been a while since I read it though!
