■ Lacecap hydrangea has begun to bloom. Lacecap hydrangea is the original wild form of hydrangea and is native to Japan.
■ In lacecap hydrangea, the “flower-like parts” around the outside are actually enlarged sepals. The true flowers are the tiny clustered parts in the center. The small round grains in the central area are flower buds, and the ones from which stamens and pistils have emerged are the flowers currently in bloom. Seeds are produced there.
■ The tiny clustered flowers in the center are called “bisexual flowers” (also known in Japanese as shinka, meaning “true flowers”). Surrounding them like a picture frame are the so-called “decorative flowers.” These decorative flowers have neither stamens nor pistils — they consist only of sepals — so they do not produce seeds.
■ What is generally called “hydrangea” (or Hon-ajisai, the common hydrangea) is a cultivated form developed from lacecap hydrangea, in which only the decorative flowers have been enlarged and gathered together into a dome-shaped cluster.
■ Notes.

■【Message】“Every living thing has a life story.” “Even crops in a field have a life story.” “When we fill in the gaps in our knowledge, our understanding of vegetables deepens.”
■ This time, I focused on the flowers of the Welsh onion (Japanese long green onion). The second photo shows Welsh onions growing in a field. They are growing very well.
■ The first photo shows “negi-bōzu” — the round flower head of the Welsh onion. This is actually an inflorescence, a cluster made up of many small flowers. It appears at the tip of the plant from around April to June. These photos were taken in early May.
■ Young and tender negi-bōzu can be stir-fried and eaten. Flowers of other Allium species are also similar in appearance, so it is useful to keep this image in mind.
■ Welsh onion belongs to the genus Allium in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). Curiously, its flower meanings in Japan are said to be “smile,” “charm,” and “an unbreakable spirit.” I wonder who came up with the flower language of Welsh onions. ☺️
