September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On September 25th, 2023 the Greater Essex County District School Board held a ceremony to raise the Every Child Matters flag at the Administration Office. We would like to thank FNMI Student Support Worker Adrian Klein, students Migizii Wright and Autumn Michener, their families, members of the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee, Dr. Clara Howitt, Director of Education Vicki Houston, staff and everyone who joined us to honour all Residential School survivors and those who never made it home. The Every Child Matters Flag has been raised at all GECDSB schools for the full week. The Canadian flag will be lowered this afternoon until Monday morning as a sign of reverence and respect to the Indigenous community. Orange Shirt Day began at a commemoration event for the St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, B.C., where Phyllis Webstadt shared a story about having her orange first-day-of-school shirt taken from her and never seeing it again. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day are reminders to continue meaningful discussions about residential schools and their effect on Indigenous children and families. It serves as a reminder to all survivors that Every Child Matters, even if they are grown up. Please remember to wear an orange shirt to school or work tomorrow and come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
