What causes some neurons to be vulnerable to Alzheimer's-related tangles while others remain resistant? In 2023, Marcos Otera-Garcia from @Stanford, along with international collaborators, published a study that profiled single neurons with neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) directly from human Alzheimer’s brain tissue. They mapped molecular signatures that differentiate aggregation-prone from aggregation-resistant cell states across 20 neocortical subtypes. The findings indicate that synaptic dysfunction, rather than tau aggregation alone, may play a central role in neurodegeneration. This type of rich, cell-type-specific transcriptomic data requires equally advanced analysis. The question is no longer simply "What data can we generate?" but rather, "How quickly can we transform that data into biological insights?" That’s the issue Mithrl was created to address.
