What I learned about how $TSLA Tesla RoboTaxi works.
There is one single vehicle operating in Austin at any given time.
It’s like an ice cream truck.
(1) You get in a vehicle and drive to its current location or destination based on the live map and expect a 20-30 minute wait time. Park your car and wait for RoboTaxi to return to your location.
(2) You study the live tracking maps to find hotspot destinations where it’s most likely to make a visit, you sit with the app open for hours and wait for it to switch from “high demand” and book immediately and wait 30 minutes.
How do we know it’s a single car? The bookable area always moves as a single blob in the city, never breaks away to 2 blobs.
I experienced it this weekend. It’s not a RoboTaxi, it’s a single FSD demo vehicle.

Elon famously said 6 years ago that LiDAR is a fool’s errand and many at the time were skeptical about his claim. Now it’s becoming increasingly clear that Elon is right about the use of LiDAR. Sensor fusion is not optimal for autonomous driving, as evidenced by countless incidents of Waymo blocking intersections, getting stuck in traffic for no reason, getting confused in construction zones and even worse going in the lane of opposing traffic. In the recent testing of 36 vehicles with ADAS in China, vision-only FSD beats all the leading systems with LiDARs incorporated. This is a strong indication that the vision-only approach with the most extensively trained neural nets is the ultimate solution to autonomous driving and heavy reliance on LiDARs or sensor fusion means less reliance on software and training model, which leads to the countless traffic blocking incidents we see with Waymo. Separately, CEO Robin Li recently alluded to Baidu’s transition to vision-only approach while Xpeng is in the early stage to phase out Lidars. x.com/Cyber_Trailer/…

You're welcome. Clarification: The 2025 Waymo fatality involved a speeding human-driven Tesla (not on FSD, per reports) rear-ending a stationary, unoccupied Waymo and other vehicles, killing one person in another car. NHTSA data confirms 137 incidents, but this highlights shared road risks beyond autonomy.
