@US_Stormwatch As the Earth's climate warms, the oceans are also absorbing a large portion of the excess heat. Not good news for marine life and coral reefs due to potential algal blooms, ocean acidification, etc.

An extraordinary marine heatwave has developed off the east coast of Canada, with hundreds of thousands of square miles of ocean experiencing sea surface temperatures more than 5°C (9°F) above normal and max anomalies approaching 10°C (18°F) above normal. Thermal stress from this marine heatwave could have major impacts on marine life in the Northwest Atlantic.

Interesting, ML for model emulation and general forecasting purposes. Will this progress beyond traditional numerical weather and climate prediction workflows that are based on physics-based emulations?

@WHUT Indeed, indices indicate different climate patterns that influence the occurrence and frequency of events. Different model views of risk can reflect these phases, e.g. NAO+ or - index values, La Nina vs El Nino etc. I am curious how your approach can be applied beyond this.

@mktinth I've been asked what the purpose of climate index modeling is because it's not an immediately usable product, such as predicting a storm track. Yet, the reality is that the next El Nino that occurs will dwarf the damages of a single hurricane in terms of global costs.

🤔 Interesting concept relating the Earth to a topological insulator (drawing similarities to how electrons behave) to understand large-scale weather patterns, or maybe even lead to new geophysical discoveries #quantum #physics #climatechange
IBES: Institute at Brown for Environment & Society@Brown_IBES

Brad Marston, IBES Fellow and @brown_physics Professor, has found that some features of fluid flow on Earth can be explained by principles that traditionally apply to quantum systems. You can read more about the new study in @QuantaMagazine. quantamagazine.org/how-quantum-ph…

@WHUT Interesting that you have been able to model the major climate indices (apart from QBO) and how this links with LOD. I am not an expert but curious in the application to climate modelling and deriving more relfective event sets (e.g., for TCs) for catastrophe modelling.

Unsurprisingly, sectors like technology, pharmaceuticals, automotive, aerospace, and electronics tend to have higher R&D investments due to the constant need for innovation and competitiveness in these industries.

Yet R&D investment can vary significantly by sector and depending on the country, region, and specific industries based on their priorities, technological advancements, and economic conditions.
