This isn’t about numbers of followers or engagement. It’s about the memories I built there. I’ve been cosplaying for years, on and off since 2015. When the pandemic hit, everything paused. Like many others, I couldn’t go to conventions anymore, and for a while, I lost that part of myself too. Then in 2021, I met Jasmine online. We finally met in person at a convention in 2022. She probably never knew this, but she’s the reason I fell back in love with cosplay. She was talented, kind, and genuinely beautiful inside and out. Even when people said hurtful things about her skin color, she kept going. She kept shining. We weren’t the kind of friends who talked every day, but I always saw her, her posts, her progress, her presence. That was enough to remind me why I loved this community. We met again in 2023. She looked just as amazing as ever. Not long after, I heard she was seriously ill. She never told me herself. Then things got complicated. There was a misunderstanding involving other people, and I ended up distancing myself. I unfollowed, blocked, and chose silence because I didn’t want drama. I told myself it was for peace. A month later, I thought about her out of nowhere. I wondered if I should reach out and explain everything. I didn’t. I hesitated. The next day, I saw the message: “RIP Jasmine.” I didn’t know what to feel. Just shock, and then guilt that wouldn’t leave. I kept asking myself why I didn’t send that message. Why I waited. She never knew how much she meant to me. She never knew she was one of the reasons I kept cosplaying… one of the reasons I kept going at all. I remember her once saying she wanted to become a successful cosplayer. I truly believe she already was, in all the ways that matter. Some people leave too soon, like the most beautiful flowers picked before their time. Thank you, Jasmine. You are deeply missed, and you always will be. I won’t forget you.
