Qualitative coding is one of the most time-consuming tasks in social science research. Thousands of open-ended responses, trained coders, weeks of work. And all still vulnerable to fatigue and bias. @GinoMarttelo and colleagues at @universidad_los and @Universida99410 de Colombia--with collaborators at University of Michigan, Rice University, University of Toronto, and University of Southampton--built a practical eight-step workflow for using LLMs to develop, test, and apply coding taxonomies to unstructured text. No vague promises about AI potential. Actual prompts, Python code, and open materials. We tested it on 3,183 personal goals collected across socioeconomic groups in Colombia. GPT-4 and human coders reached strong agreement (ICC = .824). Coding time: ~10 hours. Manual equivalent: 80+ hours. That's an 87.5% reduction, time better spent on literally any other part of the research process. Researchers stay in control throughout. They design prompts, evaluate outputs, make decisions.
