#JusticeForZara is referring to the heartbreaking death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, a 13‑year‑old Form One student at a religious boarding school in Papar, Sabah. On 16.07.2025, around 3 AM, Zara was found unconscious near a drain beside her dormitory, in what authorities believe was a fall from the third floor of the hostel. She was rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu and died the following day on 17.07.2025. She was buried without an autopsy on 17.07.2025, something her mother later deeply regretted. Soon after the tragedy, allegations emerged that Zara had been singled out and repeatedly bullied by senior students, including individuals nicknamed “Kak Wana,” “Kak Dedeng,” and “Tomboi.” Disturbingly, rumours circulated that some accused were connected to VIP families, though authorities have found no evidence of such links. The hashtag #JusticeForZara went viral, reflecting mass calls for accountability, reform in boarding school safety, and closure for Zara’s family. By 30 to 31.07.2025, over 60 witnesses, including students, staff, and parents, had been interviewed. The Sabah Police Commissioner confirmed the probe is examining both the cause of death and bullying allegations. On 02.08.2025, the Home Minister confirmed the investigation is completed and will be referred to the Attorney‑General’s Chambers (AGC) soon. On 03.08.2025, Zara’s mother filed a new police report, recalling discovered bruises on her daughter’s back that could suggest prior trauma. Her lawyers have requested exhumation and a post‑mortem examination. The Prime Minister affirmed that no one will be shielded in the investigation, and emphasised that accusations must be backed by evidence. Sabah PAS, parents’ associations, and child welfare advocates have called the incident a systemic failure, pointing to lack of CCTV, unsafe dorm protocols, and pressure on juniors to accept bullying under the guise of tradition. There’s widespread demand for a full safety audit of boarding schools, mandatory follow-through of the Education Ministry’s Child Protection Code, and disciplinary action against any responsible party, student, staff or administrator. AGC Review: Decisions will be made based on police files and new findings (e.g. exhumation results). Possible Exhumation and Autopsy: If granted, it may reveal whether physical trauma contributed to her death. Institutional & Legal Reforms: The case may mark a turning point in how bullying, especially in boarding schools, is managed in Malaysia. This is what #JusticeForZara means in the context of Zara Qairina’s tragic death, a demand for transparency, accountability, and justice, not only through legal channels but also systemic changes to protect students. Please pray for Zara's parents, as she was their only child who tragically died due to ongoing bullying.
