This is likely the most strategically significant Russian military region near any NATO country. 2. Finland Has NATO’s longest land border with Russia (about 1,340 km). Russia is expanding and reactivating military infrastructure near the Finnish border, especially in northwestern Russia and Karelia, as well as around Kola. 3. Estonia and Latvia Both border Russia directly. Not as heavily militarized as Kola, but still highly exposed due to proximity to Russia’s Western Military District and areas like St. Petersburg and Pskov. 4.
