Back to the summit 17 years after his legendary solo attack up Alpe D’Huez that won him both the stage and sealed the victory of the yellow jersey in the 2008 Tour de France, we returned to the mountain with Carlos Sastre – and a very special bike.

Just picked up my ultra-groovy new gravel bike from @moda_bikes – and what a beauty she is! I’ve named her Purple Haze, a nod to Jimi (obviously) and the stunning two-tone paint job that Moda customised for me. It’s an incredible piece of kit, and I’m already dreaming of the trails ahead. After a long break following a crash on my road bike a few years ago, it feels fantastic to be back in the saddle. Give it a few weeks and I’ll be fitter than a butcher’s dog!
