Good news Tuesday: Here's an exclusive shot from Actuarius Art of the faithfully recreated Monument to the Queensway (Mersey) Tunnel in Liverpool, which topped out in recent days. The 60ft Art Deco light beacon was originally designed by Herbert Rowse in 1934, to celebrate the engineering and construction of the tunnel. When it first opened, a pair of identical fluted columns in polsihed black granite, topped with ornate illuminated beacons, stood at either side of the Mersey by the tunnel entrances - one in Liverpool and the other in Birkenhead. The column on the Liverpool side was removed in the 1960s due to major road layout changes around the tunnel entrance and was subsequently lost. The column on the Birkenhead side remains and was Grade II listed in 1998. The recreated monument has been engineered using reinforced concrete, polished to closely resemble the original black granite used in the 1930s. Preserving the authenticity and aesthetic of the original while incorporating modern materials and construction techniques.
