I just realised something about Disney+ Taiwan and Hong Kong's character posters: they wrote '理'安大君 instead of '李'安大君 (both have the exact same pronunciation). 李 (li) is the most common Hanja for 'Lee', which means that Lee Ahn does not derive from Wan's surname. The Hanja is written as 理安 (Ri-An/I-An), not 李安 (Lee-An). While they sound the same in Korean (이안), their meanings are totally different. 李 is the Lee surname, but 理 usually refers to logic or governance. In Joseon, Grand Princes received titles based on virtues or locations to distinguish their royal rank from their personal names. Historically, King Yejong's personal name was Lee Hwang (이황/李晄), but he was known as Grand Prince Haeyang. This is similar to the Duke of York in the UK. Since Lee Wan's father changed his name twice to subdue him, 이안 is an identity forced upon him, not just a name. Are we going to have to switch to I-An/Yi-An now instead of Lee Ahn? 🥹
