Mayo's 40% retention rate from their own kickout is the lowest retention rate of any team in Sam Maguire in a single game this year. Kildare & Westmeath both had 44% once and lost. The next lowest retention combined with a win was also Mayo vs Louth 47% & Mayo vs Cork 52%.

The weather throughout summer 1985 was an abysmal and farmers (far more numerous people then than now and reliant on making hay for fodder as baled silage was then in its infancy) were in despair. That August, in the All Ireland semi final, Mayo played some brilliant football in a dramatic comeback against Dublin, eventually forcing them to a replay. Straight after the game, a roving RTE interviewer found a Mayo fan who praised his team for banishing all the worries and miserly that had been hanging over everyone throughout the summer. I remember his comments striking a chord not only in our house but with many of our neighbours.
