💀 Why Samant Goel should be India’s next NSA and why It matters! Delhi’s power circles are already buzzing. When NSA Ajit Doval retires, the name that keeps coming up is former R&AW chief Samant Goel. Not because of optics or politics, but because of capability. He is not a headline maker. He is the man sent to deal with the problem behind the headlines. Goel is known for being blunt in high level meetings. In his interaction with Jake Sullivan, he reportedly made India’s position clear without filters. Pakistan survives on two pillars, terror networks and nuclear blackmail. Continued backing from big powers only makes the region more unstable. India is no longer operating under fear of nuclear signaling and is willing to call that bluff if needed. During his tenure at R&AW, India’s intelligence posture expanded aggressively. After the US exit from Afghanistan, Goel moved quickly to deepen operational linkages with Iran, Kazakhstan, and Russia. This was a calculated shift to secure India’s interests in a rapidly changing region. He developed strong rapport with Russia’s security establishment, including Patrushev, strengthening intelligence coordination. There were even concerns in other intelligence circles about the emerging India Iran Russia alignment and quiet pressure on India over projects like Chabahar. In 2021, Goel and Doval visited Kazakhstan to push defense cooperation and explore a broader multi country security framework involving Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Russia, and India. This was long term strategic architecture, not short term diplomacy. In August 2025, Goel quietly visited Moscow at the invitation of Russian intelligence. This was not symbolic. It reportedly led to a joint probe into terror financing networks linked to diamond trade routes running through Surat, Dubai, and Karachi. These networks have long been suspected in funding operations connected to 26/11 and later hybrid threats. Tracing these financial pipelines could expose the backbone of cross border terrorism. On Bangladesh, Goel played a silent but decisive role during instability in early 2024. Through discreet engagements with Awami League figures and sections of the military in neutral locations like Mauritius, Africa, and Dubai, his network worked to maintain balance. Efforts were also made to break opposition alignments and counter external influence attempts. Plans like a Dhaka Delhi undersea interception link were reportedly explored before being blocked under pressure. His network was also active in the Maldives, engaging local actors to push back against external interference and maintain India’s strategic space in the region. Earlier in his career as R&AW station chief in London, Goel reportedly recruited assets linked to Khalistani networks, including those overlapping with British intelligence awareness. This created friction with UK agencies and is believed by some to have contributed to later intelligence leaks to Canada during the Nijjar episode, triggering a diplomatic standoff. Goel also pushed for reviving the Russia India China format and maintained communication channels even with adversarial states. His core belief was simple, interests matter more than values and no relationship is permanent. Domestically, his tenure saw increased operational pressure on terror networks, including intensified actions in areas like Kulgam and expansion of India’s global intelligence footprint. The larger question is about India’s future. If the goal is Viksit Bharat by 2047, then national security cannot be soft. Some argue that India may eventually need a more security driven governance model, similar to how strong states consolidate power to ensure stability. It is a hard argument, but one that is gaining space in strategic discussions. Goel represents that mindset. Calm on the surface, ruthless when required, and always operating a few steps ahead.
