Time for #IUFRO2024! Looking forwards to some cool talks about peatlands in a forestry context!

@TaralynTan @NSF Different field, but this happened to me. Kinda weird experience and really messed with me. Amazing how fast 'no' turned into 'yes' though. Remind them they're awesome and they can probably go wherever they want now, just need to reach out!

@JohnSug @taka_does_stuff Ooh nice! Thanks for the numbers. If men and women had the same finish rate we would predict just under 2-3 female fishers in that time (since you can't have 0.96 of a finisher). So female finishes really are fewer than we'd expect based on entrance rate. Interesting!

@moirahough Using @taka_does_stuff's data, since 2004, 587 male starters, 17 male finishers, 2.9% male finish rate. Since 2004, 102 female finishes (or 17.4% of total starters)

@JohnSug To be clear, the answer doesn't change anything about impressiveness of Jasmin Paris or any other participant. I'm just curious about the stats

@JohnSug So I've been wondering: 1) what percentage of men who have started #bm100 have finished? and 2) how many women have started? If Jasmin finishes would this put us above or below the ratio? Basically I wonder if part of no woman finishes yet is probability by low entrance rates.

@KendallSciWrite Baking soda. Sprinkled over pads/tampons in a ziplock it cuts the smell like magic. Then just pack the whole thing out.

Let's talk about #periods while doing #fieldwork. How do you handle them? Tampons and ziploc bags? Menstrual cups? Period panties? Suppressing them? My inquiring mind wants to know... Breaking the menstruation taboo to make fieldwork more inclusive nature.com/articles/d4158…

@ElsaHAbs Interesting! I wasn't looking hard at diversity metrics specifically but I'd say it mostly depended on conditions after thaw: some conditions (namely sphagnum wetlands) had lower diversity and others higher (sedge wetland in this case)

@moirahough made me think of your work! She found a decrease in microbial diversity with thawing. Did you find that too?

@joymobrien shows her really cool work about change in microbial abundance and community composition with permafrost thaw! #ESA2023 PS 207

Question: Are there ecology societies specifically for South America? Africa? India? Or are most ecology societies based in global north countries? Would love to hear from global south colleagues. I see chapters of the societies, but not their own, and that feels real colonizing.

Welcome to the #WetlandCup! There will be 16 wetland types, 8 wetland plants/features and 8 'less serious' categories going head-to-head for you to decide - what is your favourite? There will be a poll each day. #WorldWetlandsDay

Really recommend reading @ultracricket’s article in @nytimes on how they just got fired by @ORNL for a non violent climate activist action at #AGU22. Wtf @ORNL @theAGU? Loving that non violent climat activists are 1000 times more harshly punished than sexual harassers

Woohoo! The Global Peatlands Assessment is out! So fun to have gotten to help write a very small part of this exciting document highlighting a particularly beautiful and critical ecosystem type! unep.org/resources/glob…

@ElsaHAbs @fungi_lover 🤣 Yes! That paper should have gone out to review based on title alone! Maybe we can just invade/take over Science Advances and make it our own. They clearly don't know what they're doing!

@skwinnicki Hugs. I feel you. As a field ecologist and a trail runner I often get asked if I'm afraid of wildlife when I go into the mountains alone. I always explain I'm actually much safer there than in urban places. The animal most likely to bother me is a human male.

@fungi_lover Oof! I feel bad for the mother but also bad for the daughter. That's a lot of not understanding what it's actually like! I remember as a kid asking my dad about the cool places he went for work trips. He always said: well, all the conference rooms look about the same.
