Decoding the navigation lights ✈️
Red + Green visible = Aircraft flying TOWARD you
Both navigation lights are in view. You're looking at the nose.
White light only = Aircraft flying AWAY from you
White position lights) visible from the rear of the aircraft.
Green light only = Aircraft passing LEFT to RIGHT
You're seeing the right navigation light (starboard side).
Red light only = Aircraft passing RIGHT to LEFT
You're seeing the left navigation light (port side).
Red + White = Aircraft angling away, LEFT side visible Oblique departure angle.
You catch both the left wing and tail navigation lights.
Green + White = Aircraft angling away, RIGHT side visible
Same oblique angle from the opposite side.
Red + Green = Aircraft passing overhead or beneath you
Both wing navigation lights come into view as it approaches or departs your position.
