Then, before the game we had him do a couple rounds of box breathing to calm down, and visualize what he wanted to happen to be more certain. The next game he felt little to no anxiety, was focused, and ended up scoring.

It will always seem worse in the moment. Your initial reaction will almost always be based on current emotion. Slow it down and review your performance after 24hrs. Be honest when criticizing your own game and learn to leave emotion out of it.
