I had a discussion with one of my brothers a week ago about how the price of beef had gotten so out of hand that I stopped buying red meat. He agreed the prices were high, but he told me that he still found affordable steaks at Costco. I was dubious. What he considers affordable compared to me is likely worlds apart. He will smoke cigars worth more than a good steak. Nevertheless, I took his advice and decided to look at the beef prices at Costco. A few days ago, I found myself approaching the open refrigerated meat case at Costco. At the same moment, a young couple was approaching from the other end. As my eyes scanned the prices, trying to find the affordable cuts my brother said I would find, I heard laughter. I glanced at the young couple and saw they were breaking out in laughter as she pointed at the various labels. I asked, “You’re laughing at the prices, aren’t you?” She said, “Yes.” I looked up and around over my shoulder and asked, “Where are the hot dogs?” They laughed with me. I did not buy any beef. If they can make an artificial steak that looks like a steak, tastes like a steak, bites like a steak, is as healthy as a steak, and this is key, affordable, then as far as I am concerned, it is a steak. (PS: I trust Israelis to produce such a product a thousand times more than I would trust Bill Gates.)

This steak is a product from Israeli company Redefine Meat, made out of vegetable protein and oil and formed with a 3D printing process.
